In a Media Release on Wednesday (28th December 2022), the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries said it is forced to correct “the false and intentionally misleading story” that has been authored by journalist Curtis Williams, under a Reuters' publication titled, ’Trinidad prepared to reject BP, Shell offshore exploration bids.’
The Ministry states that, “Once again, this particular author has gotten his story wrong in his continued efforts to mislead not only the population of Trinidad and Tobago but now so, a wider global audience with this intentionally misleading story published by Reuters today.” The statement added, “Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Honourable Stuart R. Young, M.P. has informed the public, on several occasions, including via a nationally-carried TV6 news story last night, that the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries will be engaging in discussions and negotiations with both bpTT and Shell Trinidad and Tobago with respect to their bids for four (4) deep water blocks. Despite this open source information, Curtis Williams has intentionally authored a false story and unfortunately used Reuters as his publication platform.” According to the Ministry, “Both bpTT and Shell Trinidad and Tobago were informed weeks ago that the Ministry would be engaging them in discussions and negotiations pertaining to their bids for the four (4) deep water blocks and the parties are expected to commence these discussions and negotiations in January 2023.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “This irresponsible journalism by Mr. Williams is condemned and rejected.” A 10-year-old girl was knocked down by a vehicle while attempting to cross the Toco Main Road earlier this week. The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts said in a Media Release today (Tuesday 27th December 2022) that the Maracas beach roadway and carpark is now accessible to members of the public, following the “quick and effective response from the combined efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, the Facility and Maintenance Unit at Maracas beach and the UDECOTT Facility Maintenance.”
The roadway and carpark became inaccessible on Christmas Day due to a combination of Spring Tide and waves up to 3.5 meters (11.5 feet), which triggered coastal flooding. The Ministry reports that, despite unfavourable conditions that resulted in logistical difficulties, “the team was able to quickly clear and widen the river mouth to enable the waters to recede at Low Tide, thus permitting access to the Maracas beach.” Members of the public are reminded to pay special attention to the Orange Level Hazardous Seas Alert issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) and to exercise extreme caution when visiting the nation's beaches.

UPDATE 4: The two (2) women who were in the car were able to walk away from the crash and were seen sitting on a patch of grass, a short distance away from where the accident occurred. They were later taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope, where they were treated for minor injuries and then discharged.
UPDATE 3: Police said that while Alleyne was on his way to Piarco International Airport, near UWI, he struck the barrier that divides the East and Westbound lanes of the Highway. He struck the barrier on the driver’s side. As a result, Alleyne sustained the worst of the injuries, with a major skull fracture and his right arm was totally severed.
Police noted that there were no brake impressions anywhere near the point of impact, which led them to speculate that neither Alleyne nor his two (2) passengers may have been aware of what was going on until it was too late.
UPDATE 2: Police have speculated that Alleyne may have fallen asleep at the wheel of his Jaguar sedan, which slammed into a concrete barrier, killing him almost instantly, while sparing the lives of two (2) women who were with him in the vehicle.
UPDATE: Police Road Safety Co-ordinator Constable Brent Batson said Alleyne had two (2) passengers in his vehicle and they were heading to Piarco Airport for a flight to Tobago. Alleyne lost control of the vehicle, hit the traffic light pole and died upon impact. The two (2) passengers survived and were taken to seek medical treatment.
Constable Batson added, “We are asking persons to please, take their time on the road as these are the consequences, sometimes often unintended (sic), and we are going into the New Year festivities as well and we’re really hoping to see persons support our road safety to prevent these types of tragedies from occurring.”

A 39-year-old man was stabbed to death at his home in Sangre Grande on Christmas night (Sunday 25th December 2022), by a woman known to him. The man has been identified as Nichusasi Wells of Picton Road, Sangre Grande. The woman, who is claiming self-defence, was detained by Officers following the incident and is expected to be questioned and provide a statement.
According to reports, around 10:00 PM on Sunday, Wells and the woman got into an argument, which allegedly became physical and Police were told that Wells hit the woman several times. The woman told investigators that during the fracas, she grabbed a knife and stabbed Wells in the neck, who then fell back and onto the ground. Upon realizing what transpired, the woman allegedly raised an alarm and notified the Police and Paramedics. Wells was taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital, however, he died while undergoing treatment. A team of Officers led by W/Insp Sylvester and Insp Ramlakhan from the Eastern Division, as well as the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, visited the Hospital. The woman, who had accompanied Wells to the Hospital, was detained. The Officers then visited the home where the incident took place and a bloodied knife was seized from the scene. Residents of the area said that they were not sure about the report that the woman had given to investigators. Speaking to the Express, resident Rohan Samuell said, “Nico is a cool soul. He is always friendly and he always has nothing but love for everyone. Now you will never know everything going on behind closed doors, but what I can say is that woman used to be hitting and verbally abusing that man all the time. If he tell a woman on the street ‘good morning,’ she was always arguing with him. It had a time that he was in the bar and she come up and start slapping him up. And he never once raised his hands, not even to defend himself from her. So something not adding up to me. But, like I said, you never know what going on when them doors closed. And you never know what could have led to this. The resident added, “But what I go say is that people need to realize that men have feelings too, and men does get abused too. And men need to remove themselves from situations that are like that, same as a woman, because it is dangerous. You might care about that individual when the good times are good. But when them bad times come around, and they become physical, you never know how far they will go with it, so they need to remove themselves from situations like that. Both man and woman.” This incident has yet to be classified as a murder, and Police are awaiting the post-mortem, which is carded to take place on Wednesday (28th December 2022), before seeking legal advice on how to proceed against the detained woman. Customers are encouraged to make full use of their digital banking services. Pictured Above: Current President, Paula-Mae Weekes. According to a Notice posted in the TT Gazette, dated 23rd December 2022, there will be an election in January 2023 for a new President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The Electoral College will convene on Friday 20th January 2023 to elect the new President.
While the Office of the President has not officially commented on the news, a source close to current President Paula-Mae Weekes allegedly said that the country’s first woman President had ”always made it clear that she would not be serving a second term.” Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Electoral College, Bridgid Annisette-George, stated the following in the Notice: In accordance with section 26 of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, it is hereby announced that an election for the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago shall be held on Friday 20th January 2023. A meeting of the Electoral College, established under section 28 of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, shall be convened on the said Friday 20th January 2023 when a President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago shall be elected.” The Notice further advised: “A person shall not be a candidate for election as President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago unless nominated for election by a nomination paper which - (a) is signed by the candidate and by twelve (12) or more Members of the House of Representatives; and (b) is delivered to the Speaker at least seven (7) days before the election.” President Weekes took office over four (4) years ago, on 19th March 2018. She was, at the time, the only nominated candidate for the post and was therefore elected without the need for a vote. She became the country’s sixth President and the first woman in our history to hold that title. President Weekes has often been criticized by members of the public for her perceived silence or inaction on national issues, such as our current historic crime level, while others have defended the President as having her hands tied by the system. She has previously outlined the constitutional boundaries within which she must act. [Source: Trinidad Express] |
