The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts said in a Media Release today (Tuesday 27th December 2022) that the Maracas beach roadway and carpark is now accessible to members of the public, following the “quick and effective response from the combined efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, the Facility and Maintenance Unit at Maracas beach and the UDECOTT Facility Maintenance.”
The roadway and carpark became inaccessible on Christmas Day due to a combination of Spring Tide and waves up to 3.5 meters (11.5 feet), which triggered coastal flooding. The Ministry reports that, despite unfavourable conditions that resulted in logistical difficulties, “the team was able to quickly clear and widen the river mouth to enable the waters to recede at Low Tide, thus permitting access to the Maracas beach.” Members of the public are reminded to pay special attention to the Orange Level Hazardous Seas Alert issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) and to exercise extreme caution when visiting the nation's beaches.
