The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) said this afternoon (Friday 31st May, 2024) that it continues to monitor the Tropical North Atlantic for weather developments as they occur to the East of Trinidad and Tobago and the Lesser Antilles.
At present, there are two (2) Tropical Waves to the East of Trinidad and Tobago in the Equatorial Atlantic. The axis of the nearest Tropical Wave has been located near 48W/49W longitude, approximately 720 nautical miles (829 miles, 1,333 km) East of Trinidad and Tobago. This Wave is moving quickly towards the West between 15 kts to 20 kts. Although the forward motion has been varying, the axis of this Wave is expected to reach Trinidad and Tobago by Saturday evening (1st June, 2024) or early Sunday morning (2nd June, 2024). As a result of convergence ahead of the axis, Trinidad and Tobago could experience some partly cloudy periods from Saturday, with light or moderate showers in a few areas and the risk of the development of an isolated heavy shower or thunderstorm. An increase in cloudiness is likely on Sunday with the continued risk for the development of isolated heavy showers or thunderstorms. Conditions are expected to become settled during Sunday afternoon to evening, but by late Sunday night into Monday morning (3rd June, 2024), as a result of trailing convergence and some modulation of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) moisture, there is likely to be cloudy periods, with light to moderate showers over varying areas and a medium to high chance for the development of heavy showers or thunderstorms. Another Tropical Wave has been located in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic with its axis positioned near 28W/29W longitude. Its present forward motion is towards the West at 10 kts to 15 kts. At this speed, the axis could reach the Lesser Antilles by late next week. With the occurrence of heavy showers or thunderstorms, winds can become gusty and street or flash flooding is likely. If there is any prolonged rainfall in elevated areas, the risk of landslips or landslides increases. In the near-surface to the mid-levels, the wind is expected to be moderate and steady, and even sometimes strong, especially after the passage of the axis of the Tropical Wave. It is possible for this to translate down to the surface at times, giving breezy to windy, or gusty conditions, most likely in the vicinity of any shower or in elevated areas. The Met Office notes that the present Saharan dust concentration in the atmosphere is generally mild and is expected to continue to be mostly mild, occasionally moderate for at least the next five (5) days. Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS.
Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood Christopher, visited and held discussions on Friday 24th May, 2024 with Senior Officers in the Tobago Division. This, as a follow up to previous discussions held to address the crime situation on the island.
In a Media Release on Thursday (30th May, 2024), the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said, in addressing the Officers, she expressed concerns on the increase of violent and other serious crimes affecting the Tobago public and discussed strategies to combat this situation with Officers. Many citizens were awoken early this morning (Thursday 30th May, 2024) after two (2) earthquakes rattled parts of Trinidad. According to the UWI Seismic Research Center (SRC), the first earthquake, a magnitude 2.9, occurred at 2:57 AM, followed by a magnitude 2.7 at 5:08 AM. Both earthquakes were on land and occurred at shallow depths, which is why they felt stronger than their actual magnitudes (2.9 and 2.7).
Persons reported feeling strong shaking and some heard a “boom” sound associated with the earthquakes.
UWI SRC notes that when an earthquake occurs, seismic waves are generated. The P-Wave is the fastest and the frequency of this wave can end up in the audio range that us humans can hear. It can sound like a rumble or distant thunder or a noisy vehicle passing by. You may not feel it but it is strong enough to vibrate the air and create the sound you hear.
Below are some data on both earthquakes from UWI SRC:
Magnitude 2.9
Magnitude 2.7
Did you feel these earthquakes overnight? Let us know in the comments below. A man has been charged arising out of investigations into the kidnapping for ransom of businesswoman Anisha Hosein, the daughter of the owner of Sauce Doubles in El Dorado, on 18th May, 2024.
