The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) called for teachers to take a “day of rest” today (Thursday 30th September 2021) to express their frustrations with the Ministry of Education. Many teachers in the Government primary school system apparently heeded the call and did not report for work today. According to Guardian Media, around 55% of teachers in the Government primary schools did not turn on their devices today, with high absenteeism reported in the South Eastern educational district (only 31% attendance). TTUTA is complaining about the disrespect and ingratitude shown towards teachers by the Ministry of Education on issues ranging from the policies for the return to physical school, outstanding salary negotiations and a lack of dialogue. The Movement for Concerned Parents said today it stands in solidarity with the teachers, as while today may be an inconvenience for students, it does not compare with the Government’s attempt to segregate them. Meanwhile, the Ministry has called for a Press Conference at 2:30pm today to address the physical re-opening of schools on Monday for Forms 4 - 6. The Ministry of Education just issued a brief statement, saying it will be hosting a Press Conference at 2:30pm today, Thursday September 30th 2021, to discuss the physical re-opening of schools for Forms 4 - 6. No further information was provided. Has there been a change in the Government’s plans to physically re-open schools for Forms 4 - 6 on Monday 4th October 2021? It is unlikely at this late stage, despite the fact that the Delta variant is already in the early stages of community spread. Government Officials said recently that they are still not satisfied with the uptake of vaccines by the school-age population. Stay tuned for the Press Conference at 2:30pm. Principal Medical Officer of Institutions, Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards, revealed yesterday (Wednesday 29th September 2021) that the Ministry of Health is bracing for a surge in Delta COVID-19 infections in the country. The Ministry recently admitted that the highly infectious and more deadly Delta variant is now circulating amongst the population. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, said we are now in the “early stages” of community spread with the Delta variant, which has become the most dominant strain worldwide. Dr. Abdool-Richards said at yesterday’s virtual Press Conference that preparations began for this eventuality even before the Delta variant was first discovered here. She noted the Ministry intends to expand the parallel healthcare system’s capacity and capabilities in order to attempt to mitigate the effects of the Delta variant. According to Dr. Abdool-Richards, the Ministry is adding fifty (50) more beds to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She said they are also bringing in more Specialists to cope with the expected increase in cases among children. “Given the number of paediatric cases that we have noted, we have also increased and allocated resources for the ICU and HDU level for paediatric cases as well as maternity cases,” she said. She said there was also the possibility of additional ventilators and dialysis machines but warns that “these resources are limited.” She added, “The resources - human resources, ventilators, dialysis machines are finite. They are limited and we’d like to preserve the resilience of the parallel healthcare system to save lives.” Dr. Abdool-Richards urged people to get vaccinated and said, by and large, the majority of patients requiring this level of care are those who are not fully vaccinated (95.5%), according to figures taken between 22nd July and 16th September 2021. She added, “These are the patients that require ventilators, dialysis and I’d like to remind everyone that we continue to see a high occupancy level.” Meanwhile, Geneticist Dr. Nicole Ramlachan and Medical Association PRO Dr. Keegan Bhaggan recently warned that a surge in cases following the discovery of the Delta variant was inevitable, and given the low vaccination rate, is likely to be the largest spike in the country to date.
