Accepting delivery of the vaccines. From left to right: Anesa Doodnath-Siboo, Principal Pharmacist (Ag.), Ministry of Health; Dr. Erica Wheeler - PAHO/WHO Country Representative; The Honourable Terrence Deyalsingh - Minister of Health; Dr. Roshan Parasram - Chief Medical Officer and Grace Sookchand - Manager, Expanded Programme on Immunization. Trinidad and Tobago received 33,600 doses of COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX facility last night (Tuesday 30th March 2021). The vaccines arrived at the Piarco International Airport at approximately 6:10pm. Among those on-hand to receive the vaccines were the Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram and PAHO/WHO Country Representative, Dr. Erica Wheeler. The COVAX facility is a global effort between the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Gavi, UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). A News Release from PAHO/WHO yesterday stated, “The arrival marks a historic step toward ensuring the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines worldwide, in the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. This delivery is part of the first phase of deliveries for Trinidad and Tobago, and more vaccines are expected to arrive successively during the coming months. According to the first round of COVAX allocations, Trinidad and Tobago is expected to continue receiving doses through May until it reaches 100,800, the amount specified by COVAX.” PAHO's Revolving Fund, which is responsible for the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines for the countries of the Americas under the COVAX mechanism, sent 33,600 doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, manufactured by SK Bioscience of South Korea. "Seeing this arrival is very reassuring and it means that more people will be able to be protected from COVID-19," said Dr. Erica Wheeler, PAHO Representative in Trinidad and Tobago. “We will continue to work with the country to support vaccination along with the entire package of known public health and social measures that we know can help stop the spread of COVID-19, protect health services, and save lives." Since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Trinidad and Tobago, the country has recorded 8,004 cases and 142 deaths as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. On this milestone in Trinidad and Tobago's COVID-19 response, Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh said, "On behalf of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. I wish to express how happy we are that these WHO-approved vaccines have landed on our soil. WHO approval assures us that the vaccines are safe and effective, and we will continue to prioritize safety over expediency. All systems are in place to continue the national COVID-19 vaccination programme with those at highest risk and highest exposure to the virus. This is an important step for us as we move from the management to the control of COVID-19." UNICEF Representative for the Eastern Caribbean Area, Dr. Aloys Kamuragiye said: "The arrival of these vaccines provides a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19, which has been battering essential services that secure the education and protection of our children. UNICEF will continue to support the Ministry of Health in its communication campaign which seeks to drive adult vaccination as an important step towards controlling the pandemic, so that we can begin to reimagine a better, safer and healthier future for everyone, especially children, young people and their families."
COVAX seeks to provide vaccines for at least 20% of the population of each participating country during 2021. In this first round of vaccine allocation, all COVAX participating countries will receive doses to vaccinate between 2.2% and 2.6% of their population. The only exceptions are small island developing States, which will receive an allocation of vaccines to cover between 16% and 20% of their population, due to the high logistical cost of delivering small quantities of vaccines. Until vaccination is widespread among the population, basic public health measures remain the basis of the Pandemic response. For public health authorities, this means continuing to conduct screening, Contact Tracing, isolation, assisted quarantine, and quality care. And for people, it means continuing to practice physical distancing, hand hygiene, the use of masks, adequate ventilation of indoor environments, and avoidance of crowded spaces. The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily 4pm update this afternoon (Tuesday 30th March 2021) that there are eighteen (18) additional COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago. This represents a 100% increase in reported cases from yesterday. These new patients will be processed for admission at the discretion of the CMOHs.

T&T’s total positive cases now crosses the 8,000 mark - to 8,004, with 254 being active cases. A total of 7,608 patients have recovered from the virus to date. 216 persons are in home self-isolation and there are 313 persons in total at State quarantine facilities. The Ministry states that of the eighteen (18) new positive cases, three (3) are recently repatriated persons. Further, the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during the period 27th - 29th March 2021 and not the last 24 hours. In its latest update, the Ministry notes that there have been nine (9) recovered community cases. Recovered community cases refer to persons who were previously COVID-19 positive and in self-isolation at home, and subsequently met the discharge criteria and were released from self-isolation. Gang warfare among rival groups in the Laventille area is suspected to be the motive behind last night’s murder of two (2) teenagers who had escaped from the custody of the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago on 19th March 2021.
This was confirmed today (Monday 29th March 2021) by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Ag), Investigations and Intelligence, Mc Donald Jacob, as Homicide Bureau Officers intensify their investigations into the killings. Mr. Jacob said investigators have received vital information and that the probe is now at a sensitive stage. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), around 7:10pm on Sunday 28th March 2021, Police Officers responded to a report of several loud explosions heard in the vicinity of Mc Shine Lands, Laventille, Port-of-Spain. On arrival, the Police Officers met an informant who pointed out an abandoned house. The Police Officers made checks and discovered the bodies of two (2) young men lying motionless on a rooftop, which was the same level as the roadway. They were later identified as Antoine Francois and Semion Daniel, both 15-years-old, who had escaped from a Children’s Authority Support Centre on Friday 19th March 2021. The District Medical Officer visited the scene, viewed the bodies, and ordered the removal pending post-mortem examinations at the Forensic Science Centre. Crime Scene personnel processed the scene and recovered items of evidential value. Investigators revealed that Antoine Francois and Semion Daniel were in company with other persons at Mc Shine Lands, Laventille, when they were accosted by two (2) armed men, who wore clothing resembling that of the Police with the word ‘POLICE’ marked on the back. The young persons tried to escape, but the assailants pursued Francois and Daniel, following which several loud explosions were heard. Two (2) brothers, who were present, were shot and wounded, and taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for treatment. A third escapee from Children’s Authority Support Centre, who was also in the group, was not injured and was taken into protective custody. Enquiries are continuing. |
