The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Hazardous Seas Alert (Yellow Level) from 5am on Saturday 2nd January 2021 until 8am on Monday 4th January 2021. This Alert applies to coastal and offshore waters around Tobago as well as all exposed coastlines of Trinidad. The Met Office notes that sea conditions will be agitated over the weekend and are expected to become rough with wave heights averaging 2.5m and occasionally peaking up to 3.5m along affected areas. Sea conditions in sheltered areas will be choppy at times. All marine interests must exercise extreme caution and monitor sea conditions before venturing out. The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily 4pm update this afternoon (Thursday 31st December 2020) that there is another unfortunate COVID-19 related death in Trinidad and Tobago, plus eighteen (18) additional cases. This represents a substantial 260% increase in reported cases from yesterday. No information has yet been provided about the latest death.
The Ministry reported only five (5) cases yesterday plus another death. The country’s death toll now stands at 127. T&T’s confirmed cases now rises to 7,150, with 373 being active cases. A total of 6,650 patients have recovered from the virus to date. The Ministry states that of the eighteen (18) new positive cases, two (2) are from Tobago. Further, the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during the period 28th - 30th December 2020 and not the last 24 hours. The Ministry also notes that there are currently twenty-eight (28) COVID-19 positive patients being treated at Hospitals and sixty-five (65) patients are in step-down/transition facilities. The Ministry of Works and Transport is advising the general public that authorization has been granted to light motor vehicles only, to utilize the Priority Bus Route (PBR) from Mt. Hope to Port-of-Spain (Vierra Street Abattoir Road), Westbound lane only from today (Thursday 31st December 2020) until further notice.
The Ministry notes that repair works are taking place on Wrightson Road (Westbound), as such, it is advisable to use the Eastern Main Road and South Quay to your final destination in Port-of-Spain. Please be guided accordingly. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is advising motorists that there will be an increase in road policing activities across the nation in the coming days. A Media Release issued by the TTPS on Thursday (31st December 2020), states that Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, has instructed all Divisional Traffic and Highway Patrol Units to conduct DUI and speed enforcement exercises, as the TTPS aims to prevent any loss of life or injury due to unsafe and irresponsible road usage.
Commissioner Griffith has also instructed Officers to continue enforcing the illegal use of fireworks and breaches of the COVID-19 Public Health Regulations to ensure public safety over the New Year’s period. Meanwhile, Police Road Safety Project Coordinator, Sgt Brent Batson, is appealing to drivers to ensure they celebrate the New Year in a safe and responsible manner, by adhering to road traffic regulations. He said, "We will be out there doing what we can to help save lives and keep families together, but drivers and passengers need to do their part by wearing their seatbelts and face masks, obeying speed limits and keeping alert." Sgt Batson said Assistant Commissioner of Police, ‘Specialised Support’, Joanne Archie, and Senior Superintendent, Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, Wayne Mystar, have instructed all Highway Patrols to deploy their breathalyzer equipment and be ready to charge drunk drivers. He warns motorists, "Please designate a driver if you are going to consume alcohol or you may be spending your New Year’s Day in a Police holding cell instead of with your family. It’s your choice." The Met Office notes that showers and isolated Thunderstorms will remain in the forecast for this week and rough sea conditions are possible from Friday night (1st January 2021). Low-level convergence and increased moisture will likely result in the continuation of periods of showers and Thunderstorms. Gusty winds and Street/Flash Flooding will also be a lingering threat. Wind speeds are set to increase over the weekend and rough seas are possible as a result. It is possible for wave heights to be within 2.5m and 3.2m (8 - 10.5 ft) in open waters, which is categorized as “rough,” between Friday night (1st January 2021) and Sunday night (3rd January 2021). The agitation of sea conditions is being caused by a wind event, resulting from the positioning of atmospheric features (including the sub-tropical high) over the Atlantic. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is advising automotive sales dealers to be wary of individuals purchasing new motor vehicles with fraudulent Managers’ and Personal Cheques from any financial institution.
In a Media Release issued on Tuesday (29th December 2020), the TTPS states that according to recent reports made to the Fraud Squad, five (5) new vehicles have been obtained fraudulently from automotive dealers by a person of interest to investigators. The Fraud Squad advises that persons engaging in these transactions should seek clearance from their respective banks before parting with their goods.
