The semi-decomposing body of a woman was found hanging from a tree in Carli Bay on Monday morning (9th December, 2024). The deceased has been identified as 47-year-old Sherryann Roet of 1st Avenue, Ramlal Trace, Chickland, Freeport — a mother of two (2) children, aged fifteen (15) and eighteen (18). Based on the findings of an autopsy, Police believe she was beaten to death before being hung from the tree by her killer(s).
According to reports, a man called the Couva Police Station around 10:00 AM on Monday and reported that a woman was seen hanging from a tree in Carli Bay, near a fishing stall. Upon arrival at the scene, Officers found Roet suspended from a tree with a yellow rope around her neck. A grey Nissan Caravan (TDU 3683) was found nearby, which she co-owned with a male relative. An autopsy on Roet’s body on Tuesday (10th December, 2024) revealed that she died from blunt-force trauma. Her body showed signs of violence, including injuries to her forehead, eye, under her left arm, nose bridge, and both hands and feet.
Police are said to be seeking a Spanish-speaking man with whom Roet had a close relationship. Reports state that she had been facing a strained relationship with the man in recent months.
It is also alleged that Roet was supposed to appear in Court on Monday, the day she was found hanging, regarding a matter where she took a male person to Court. Police became suspicious of her death after learning that no missing person’s report had been filed. Investigations are continuing, led by Sgt. Deo of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region III. More on this as it becomes available. T&TEC says it regrets the inconvenience which may be caused by these interruptions. A Barrackpore businessman appeared before Master Kimitria Gray at the San Fernando High Court on Monday (9th December, 2024), after being charged with fraudulent conversion in the sum of $61,000.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), Stefon Rabindrunauth, 33, was granted bail with surety in the amount of $61,000 and will appear in Court again on 14th January, 2025. The charge stems from an incident where the victim allegedly paid Rabindrunauth, owner of an auto business, a down-payment of $61,000 via cheque. This amount represented the down-payment for the purchase and importation of a Nissan panel van, valued at $122,000, with delivery scheduled for 3rd January, 2021. However, the vehicle was not delivered as promised, and attempts to recover the down-payment proved futile. On Saturday (7th December, 2024), an operation co-ordinated by Senior Superintendent Wayne Abbott, Superintendent Arnold Lutchman, and ASP Pooran Bisnath, and supervised by Inspector Bachoo, resulted in the arrest of Rabindrunauth in the South-Western Division. He was arrested with the assistance of Officers from the Barrackpore Police Station and the Fraud Squad San Fernando Office, and was formally charged by Cpl. Ramdial. Public Advisory: The Fraud Squad is advising the public to exercise due diligence when purchasing vehicles, especially from foreign-used car dealers. It is recommended to check the legitimacy of car dealers via the Company Registry at the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs. Additionally, inquiries can be made at the Ministry of Trade and Industry to confirm whether a dealer has recently imported a vehicle. For further security, the Fraud Squad can be contacted regarding concerns about specific individuals or businesses. It seems that he had amnesia at Thursday’s presser [5th December, 2024] but regained his memory by 1:00 PM on Friday [6th December, 2024]. What is also concerning is that every member of the Cabinet must have known about these massive cost overruns and design issues, but they all remained quiet and assisted in covering it up from the public. This corrupt Cabinet are the same people who have shamelessly been selected by the PNM to face the 2025 General Election as candidates.” This from Leader of the Opposition, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, on Finance Minister Colm Imbert’s recent back-to-back Press Conferences to address cost overruns on the Tobago Airport Terminal project.
In a Media Release on Friday (6th December, 2024), Mrs. Persad-Bissessar stated, “He [Colm Imbert] was extremely disorganized and contradicted himself multiple times in his presser today. Fumbling with figures and confused when faced with questions by reporters, he appeared lost and panicked. His own Cabinet note admitted to massive cost overruns and flawed designs, coupled with inferior work. I remind the country that he brought the note with the reports attached to Cabinet and got it approved only last week; how did he not remember the note and reports yesterday [Thursday 5th December, 2024] but remembered today after publication by the media?” She continued, “Again, he misled the public as there are NO savings on land acquisition as that process is still ongoing. The Government took money from the $300 million land acquisition loan to pay for cost overruns. I have repeatedly said the Government is broke and surviving off of borrowings. The letters presented from Herbert George on behalf of NIDCO are worthless, Mr. George should begin the process of acquiring a good personal lawyer and a new copybook. Only last month he told the media that the project was on budget; this has now been exposed as a lie. He must be removed as Chairman of NIDCO. The other letters provided were of a generic nature and provided no financial or technical evidence that have been verified. Where are the technical test results and audited account statements?” The Opposition Leader added, “Yet again Rowley has behaved like a lazy cowardly old man and hid from the public after throwing a tantrum about the exposure of the massive cost overruns and flawed construction. This is the latest failed project of Rowley whose only achievement in 10 years was to raise his salary and allocate 50 million dollars for feteing and rum-drinking. The highest cost overruns of $461 million dollars could have gone to improving education, security, healthcare or job creation in Tobago. By the end of this project, this Rowley Government will cheat the people of Tobago out of $461 million dollars. What is also concerning is that every member of the Cabinet must have known about these massive cost overruns and design issues, but they all remained quiet and assisted in covering it up from the public. This corrupt Cabinet are the same people who have shamelessly been selected by the PNM to face the 2025 General Election as candidates.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “Minister Imbert cannot account for $3 billion of taxpayer’s money; now he has been caught lying about the true status of costs at the Tobago Airport Terminal. It’s time for Imbert to step down or be removed as Minister of Finance. He has absolutely discredited himself. I stand by my comments regarding the status of this project and again repeat my call for a criminal investigation into this project.” More on this as it becomes available. The Ministry of Health said it is closely monitoring the emergence of the Mayaro and Oropouche viruses, two (2) tropical diseases that pose potential health risks to the population of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. These arboviral diseases are spread primarily by the Aedes aegypti, Culex mosquitoes, and midge insect flies.
In a Media Release today (Monday 9th December, 2024), the Ministry said the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has reported 10,275 confirmed cases of the Oropouche virus, including two (2) deaths, across nine (9) countries in the Americas from 1st January to 5th October, 2024. The Ministry confirmed that there are “no reported cases of the Mayaro and Oropouche virus since their discovery in T&T in the 1950s, however, surveillance efforts continue to target patients who have been tested for Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya. Additionally, routine vector control measures are actively conducted by the Insect Vector Control Division.” Symptoms for both the Oropouche and the Mayaro virus mimic those of Dengue, leading to potential underreporting.
