The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily 4pm update this afternoon (Sunday 28th February 2021) that there are eight (8) additional COVID-19 case in Trinidad and Tobago. This represents a substantial 700% increase in reported cases from yesterday.
The Ministry reported just one (1) new case yesterday. The country’s death toll currently stands at 139. T&T’s confirmed cases now rises to 7,713, with 108 being active cases. A total of 7,466 patients have recovered from the virus to date. 83 persons are in home self-isolation and there are 261 persons in total at State quarantine facilities. The Ministry states that the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during the period 25th - 27th February 2021 and not the last 24 hours. In its latest update, the Ministry notes that there have been eight (8) recovered community cases. Recovered community cases refer to persons who were previously COVID-19 positive and in self-isolation at home, and subsequently met the discharge criteria and were released from self-isolation. The Ministry also notes that there are currently twelve (12) COVID-19 positive patients being treated at Hospitals:
Among the patients at Couva, three (3) are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There are also currently five (5) COVID-19 positive patients in step-down/transition facilities. Two (2) suspects are currently in Police custody after Officers rescued an elderly man from further injuries during a knife attack on Friday night (26th February 2021). A manhunt is on for a third assailant who was involved in the incident, which occurred at 11:30pm in the car park of Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Eastern Main Road, San Juan.
Police rushed the victim to hospital where he was treated and is currently warded in a stable condition. Task Force Officers also recovered the victim’s cell phone following the ordeal. According to a Media Release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), while surveilling the commercial banking area, North-Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) Officers observed a commotion ongoing at a car park and saw a white Toyota Aqua vehicle speeding away from the scene. A chase ensued and the vehicle was intercepted via a roadblock mounted by other members of the NEDTF in the vicinity of 9th Avenue, Barataria. Two (2) suspects, ages 26 and 31, both of Morvant, who were in the vehicle at the time, were arrested. PCs Mieres, Dass, Nanan and Campbell, who were at the scene of the car park, rendered aid to the victim who was drenched in blood from stab wounds. WPC Sequea is continuing investigations as charges in the case are pending. A 64-year-old man who resides in Petit Valley, Diego Martin, was granted $500 station bail after Port-of-Spain City Police Officers charged him for willfully and obscenely exposing himself in public.
He will answer to the charge when he appears virtually before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on 26th April 2021. The incident reportedly occurred at 1:10pm on Saturday (27th February 2021) in Woodford Square. According to a Media Release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), while on a routine foot patrol in Woodford Square, City Police Officers observed a man exposing himself and urinating on a plant. Police Officers immediately approached the alleged offender and ordered him to stop. The man, however, told City Police Officers that he was unable to, though the Officers suggested that he make use of public washrooms which were situated about 50 feet away. Following the incident, the man was immediately arrested and conveyed to the Port-of-Spain City Police Headquarters where he was charged by PC Wolfe. The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Saturday 27th February 2021) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, provided an update on the status of his Ministry’s first vaccination drive of the 2,000 doses donated from Barbados. The Minister indicated that because this vaccine requires two (2) doses, only 1,000 frontline healthcare workers could be vaccinated at this time. Of the 1,000 initial doses, 991 persons have been vaccinated so far, across three (3) RHAs which were distributed as follows:
- Minister Deyalsingh announced that T&T will be receiving 100,800 doses in the first tranche of COVID-19 vaccines from the COVAX facility at the end of March. He indicated that this first tranche will cost taxpayers US $343,162 after a US $160,838 contribution from CARPHA for the purchase of vaccines. - The Health Minister stated that Phase 1 of the Government’s vaccine roll-out will prioritize the vaccination of roughly 4,000 frontline healthcare workers, other healthcare workers and the elderly/those with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The Minister also indicated that Phase 2 of the vaccine roll-out will prioritize persons with NCDs who were not vaccinated in Phase 1 and essential workers which include: persons in the Protective Services, Teachers, Sanitation workers, Parliamentarians and Immigration Officers, to name a few.
