The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily 4pm update this afternoon (Sunday 28th February 2021) that there are eight (8) additional COVID-19 case in Trinidad and Tobago. This represents a substantial 700% increase in reported cases from yesterday.
The Ministry reported just one (1) new case yesterday. The country’s death toll currently stands at 139. T&T’s confirmed cases now rises to 7,713, with 108 being active cases. A total of 7,466 patients have recovered from the virus to date. 83 persons are in home self-isolation and there are 261 persons in total at State quarantine facilities. The Ministry states that the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during the period 25th - 27th February 2021 and not the last 24 hours. In its latest update, the Ministry notes that there have been eight (8) recovered community cases. Recovered community cases refer to persons who were previously COVID-19 positive and in self-isolation at home, and subsequently met the discharge criteria and were released from self-isolation. Two (2) suspects are currently in Police custody after Officers rescued an elderly man from further injuries during a knife attack on Friday night (26th February 2021). A manhunt is on for a third assailant who was involved in the incident, which occurred at 11:30pm in the car park of Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Eastern Main Road, San Juan.
Police rushed the victim to hospital where he was treated and is currently warded in a stable condition. Task Force Officers also recovered the victim’s cell phone following the ordeal. According to a Media Release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), while surveilling the commercial banking area, North-Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) Officers observed a commotion ongoing at a car park and saw a white Toyota Aqua vehicle speeding away from the scene. A chase ensued and the vehicle was intercepted via a roadblock mounted by other members of the NEDTF in the vicinity of 9th Avenue, Barataria. Two (2) suspects, ages 26 and 31, both of Morvant, who were in the vehicle at the time, were arrested. PCs Mieres, Dass, Nanan and Campbell, who were at the scene of the car park, rendered aid to the victim who was drenched in blood from stab wounds. WPC Sequea is continuing investigations as charges in the case are pending. A 64-year-old man who resides in Petit Valley, Diego Martin, was granted $500 station bail after Port-of-Spain City Police Officers charged him for willfully and obscenely exposing himself in public.
He will answer to the charge when he appears virtually before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on 26th April 2021. The incident reportedly occurred at 1:10pm on Saturday (27th February 2021) in Woodford Square. According to a Media Release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), while on a routine foot patrol in Woodford Square, City Police Officers observed a man exposing himself and urinating on a plant. Police Officers immediately approached the alleged offender and ordered him to stop. The man, however, told City Police Officers that he was unable to, though the Officers suggested that he make use of public washrooms which were situated about 50 feet away. Following the incident, the man was immediately arrested and conveyed to the Port-of-Spain City Police Headquarters where he was charged by PC Wolfe. The Minister indicated that because this vaccine requires two (2) doses, only 1,000 frontline healthcare workers could be vaccinated at this time. Of the 1,000 initial doses, 991 persons have been vaccinated so far, across three (3) RHAs which were distributed as follows:
- Minister Deyalsingh announced that T&T will be receiving 100,800 doses in the first tranche of COVID-19 vaccines from the COVAX facility at the end of March. He indicated that this first tranche will cost taxpayers US $343,162 after a US $160,838 contribution from CARPHA for the purchase of vaccines. - The Health Minister stated that Phase 1 of the Government’s vaccine roll-out will prioritize the vaccination of roughly 4,000 frontline healthcare workers, other healthcare workers and the elderly/those with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The Minister also indicated that Phase 2 of the vaccine roll-out will prioritize persons with NCDs who were not vaccinated in Phase 1 and essential workers which include: persons in the Protective Services, Teachers, Sanitation workers, Parliamentarians and Immigration Officers, to name a few. Kern Jerimiah, 33, of Longdenville, is due to appear virtually at the Chaguanas First Magistrates’ Court on Monday (1st March 2021), having been charged with robbery with aggravation.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the accused was arrested following an incident where around 4pm on Monday 22nd February 2021, a bakery goods salesman was robbed. It is alleged that while the salesman was in his vehicle conducting a sale along Flemming Street, Longdenville, a masked man with a firearm approached him and announced a hold up. The victim reported that the assailant relieved him of $1,700 and escaped on foot by running into a bushy area in the said street. Enquiries were conducted by the Chaguanas CID, Central Division Task Force-North and Longdenville Police, resulting in the arrest of the accused. Jerimiah was placed on an identification parade on Friday (26th February 2021) at the Chaguanas Police Station. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the anti-crime exercise, ‘Operation Sea Breeze,’ led to the seizure and destruction of $1 Million worth of marijuana in Gasparillo.
A Media Release from the TTPS states the exercise was conducted between the hours of 5am to 4pm on Thursday 25th February 2021, in the Southern and South Western Divisions. During the exercise, the party of Officers proceeded to Corosal Road, Whiteland, Gasparillo, where a search was conducted in a bushy area approximately 300 feet from the roadway. There, they discovered an open area containing 1,000 full-grown marijuana trees and 550 seedlings, with a combined estimated street value of $1 Million. The said marijuana plants were uprooted and submitted for destruction. The exercise was co-ordinated by Snr Supt Neil Brandon-John, Supt Singh, ASP Simon and supervised by Sgt Crawford and a party of Officers of the South Western Division Task Force and Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force.
