The Ministry of Health wishes is advising members of the public that they can access 24-hour care at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments of the General Hospitals and District Health Facilities during the Christmas and Boxing Day long weekend. However, the public should note that all Health Centres will be closed on both public holidays.
The Ministry is reminding the public to “celebrate responsibly during the Festive Season.” In this regard, the Ministry encourages the following:

A mother of seven (7) children was reportedly found unresponsive and floating in the water at Quinam Beach, Siparia, by her ex-common law husband on Wednesday evening (21st December 2022). The woman, identified as 37-year-old Sandy Mohammed, was a geriatric nurse of Goodwill Road, Ocean Drive, Enterprise, Chaguanas. She was found by 36-year-old Kyron Hospedales, of Foster Road, Sangre Grande.
A Hazardous Seas Alert (Orange Level) is in effect until 12:00 PM on Wednesday 28th December 2022. The ex-couple had two (2) children together, ages six (6) and two (2), while Mohammed had five (5) other children from a previous relationship. According to Police, Hospedales reported that Mohammed and himself went swimming and reached waist-high level in the sea when he decided to swim out further. He said, however, when he turned back, she could not be found. Hospedales said he went for a flashlight and searched the water, where he eventually found Mohammed floating. He then pulled her out and called for help. Estate ASP Walcott called the Siparia Police Station and reported the incident around 7:30 PM on Wednesday night. PC Singh and PC Gellizeau of the Siparia Police Station and the District Medical Officer (DMO) visited the scene. Mohammed was pronounced dead and her body ordered removed to the Forensic Sciences Centre, where an autopsy will be performed. PC Singh will continue investigations into the incident. [Source: Newsday] A 60-year-old man is dead following an alleged altercation with his neighbour in San Fernando this morning (Friday 23rd December 2022), days before Christmas. The victim has been identified as Ramraj Basdeo of #1 Retrench Settlement, Retrench Village.
A 9-year-old boy who witnessed the incident, is said to be receiving counseling from the Children’s Authority. According to reports, Police responded to the scene of a sudden death at Basdeo’s house around 8:00 AM. Upon arrival, they interviewed a relative who said Basdeo was in his yard around 6:30 AM when he had an altercation with a neighbour. A 9-year-old child reported that he saw the suspect punch Basdeo several times to his neck. He was also choked, leaving him gasping for breath. Further reports state that Basdeo was selling burgers on Thursday night (22nd December 2022), when his common-law wife, Sarika Rampersad, got into an argument with the suspect. The quarreling escalated on Friday morning, but this time between Basdeo and the suspect. It is alleged that during the argument, Basdeo was attacked by the neighbour. An ambulance was called and Basdeo was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH), where he was pronounced dead. The suspect is said to be in Police custody. The case is being treated by investigators as a suspected homicide, pending a post-mortem. [Source: Loop] UPDATE: Investigators said Wilson's body was positively identified by her relatives from the clothing and tattoos on her. Wilson's body was found floating face-down, approximately 500 feet away from the second lifeguard tower, to the West of Maracas Bay. Police were able to tie a rope to the body and it was then towed to the lifeguard headquarters at Maracas Bay. While continuing their search for 18-year-old Jada Nathalia Wilson, the Hunters Search and Rescue Team (HSRT), led by Captain Vallence Rambharat, spotted what looked like a body floating off Maracas Bay at 7:28 AM this morning (Friday 23rd December 2022).
The HSRT said in a Facebook post that Ag. Inspector Ronny Rampallard of the Trinidad and Tobago Air Support Unit, who was nearby at the time, was alerted and confirmed, utilizing a drone, “that the sighting was a body.” The body was retrieved using a boat. The identify of the body has not yet been confirmed to be that of Wilson, although it is strongly suspected. According to reports, Wilson was swimming with a male friend at Tyrico Bay at around 4:40 PM on Tuesday afternoon (20th December 2022), when she ventured about 50 meters into choppy waters. In a Media Release on Thursday (22nd December 2022), the Ministry of Health said the distribution of ex-gratia payments to health sector workers has begun and is expected to be completed shortly.
According to the Ministry, “These payments are in keeping with the promise made by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) to our health sector workers who gave yeoman service during the COVID-19 Pandemic. These ex-gratia payments were announced earlier in the year by the Honourable Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley, MP, and provided for in the 2023 Budget by the Honourable Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert, MP.” To date, the Ministry notes that a total of $198,890,122, or over 95% of the estimated ex-gratia payments, has been paid out to over 24,000 health sector workers in Trinidad and Tobago at the Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) and the Ministry of Health. When completed, the total payments are expected to be of the order of $205 million. Below is a breakdown of payments made to the different categories of health sector workers: Medical - $50,766,408 Nursing - $60,430,493 Allied Health - $20,905,579 Administrative - $28,103,245 Auxiliary - $26,900,546 Daily Paid - $11,783,852 Grand Total - $198,890,122 The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Honourable Terrence Deyalsingh, MP, Minister of Health, reiterates his gratitude to our health sector workers for their exemplary performance, dedication and determination displayed during the COVID-19 Pandemic.” The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Hazardous Seas Alert (Orange Level) for North-exposed nearshore coastal waters of Trinidad and Tobago. The Alert began at 2:00 PM today (Friday 23rd December 2022) and will remain in effect until 12:00 PM on Wednesday 28th December 2022.
According to the Met Office, large breaking waves near 3.5 metres, due to long period swells, are likely along nearshore, North-exposed coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago. Choppy conditions are also likely, especially along Northern facing coastlines in the Gulf-of-Paria. Conditions will be amplified during High Tides and exacerbated at Spring Tides. Effects will first be experienced on Northern shorelines of Tobago and then Trinidad within a couple of hours afterwards. Impacts include: Dangerous conditions for swimming and small craft operations, very high surf and dangerous rip currents near affected coastlines. Waves are currently 2.0 - 2.5 metres in open waters and near 0.5 metres in sheltered areas. Instructions: Sea bathers, fishermen, small craft operators, and other coastal interests should make preparations to secure lives, livelihoods, and coastal property. Exercise extreme caution along the coast. Prepare for dangerous breaking waves and currents. Follow the instructions of lifeguards. Monitor official news sources. The search resumes this morning (Thursday 22nd December 2022) for an 18-year-old woman who is feared to have drowned while swimming in Tyrico Bay on Tuesday afternoon (20th December 2022).
According to reports, the woman, identified as Jada Nathalia Wilson from Tunapuna, was swimming with a male friend at the beach at around 4:40 PM when she ventured about 50 meters into choppy waters. Her friend told Police that Wilson got into difficulties before disappearing underwater. Officers from the Maracas Bay Police Post visited the area and contacted the Coast Guard, who have been assisting in searching the area for Wilson. Investigators said that part of the beach was not supervised by lifeguards. Members of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team are also involved in the search for Wilson. They said in a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, “As at 6:15 PM, all efforts to locate Jada Wilson have been futile. The search will resume tomorrow [Thursday].” Police said Wilson is slim built, light brown in complexion, about five (5) feet, five (5) inches in height and was last seen wearing a pink tube top and multi-coloured tights. A Director of a Diego Martin liquor mart was granted $70,000 bail with a surety by a Justice of the Peace (JP), on three (3) counts of obtaining property by use of dishonoured cheques, totaling $86,137.71.
Frank Martineau, 72, of Cameron Road, Petit Valley, was charged with the offences by WPC Gowrie of the Fraud Squad, following a Police report in which detectives were told that a man allegedly tendered three (3) cheques to a beer company for payments for supplies during the period 7th to 17th December 2021. According to Police reports, the cheques represented three (3) payments of $37,098.23, $24,709.55 and $24,329.93. The beer company attempted to have the Director honour the payments, but were unsuccessful. On 15th December 2022, after consultation with Supt Reuben and Legal Officer, Sgt Bassarath, WPC Gowrie charged the accused with three (3) counts of obtaining property by use of dishonoured cheques, totalling $86,137.71. The suspect was arrested and conveyed to the St. James Police Station, where he was granted bail to cover all charges on the condition that he appear virtually at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court on 30th January 2023. The Ministry of Works and Transport is reminding citizens that traffic ticket payments are to be made at select TTPOST locations nationwide. All you need to carry is your ticket, reference number and a form of payment (Cash or Linx), to an authorized location near you.

According to the Ministry, “Paying your traffic ticket has never been so easy!” A 46-year-old female private school teacher and a 35-year-old male security guard were jointly charged with one (1) count of sexual penetration and one (1) count of trafficking a minor for sexual exploitation. They appeared today (Wednesday 21st December 2022) before Magistrate Indra Ramoo-Haynes at the Tunapuna Magistrates’ Court.
The teacher also answered to two (2) counts of sexual penetration at a school, two (2) counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, two (2) counts of trafficking a minor for sexual exploitation and one (1) count of sexual penetration at a house in East Trinidad. She had a total of nine (9) charges laid against her. Both accused were denied bail. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the charges stem from a report of sexual abuse and trafficking of two 12-year-old female students, made directly to the Special Victims Department on 3rd November 2022 by the Principal of the learning institution. Reportedly, both minors were sexually penetrated on the school compound by the teacher and again assaulted sexually by both accused at a location in Malabar between 1st September and 3rd November 2022. Investigations into the report were immediately launched, which uncovered a sexual exploitation ring involving minors. On 13th December 2022, both accused were arrested following a search warrant exercise. The charges were laid five (5) days later, on 18th December 2022, following the advice of Legal Officer Zaheer Ali. Both teacher and security guard are expected to re-appear in Court on 16th January 2023. Investigations into the incident were spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Division, Sharon Cooper, co-ordinated by Inspector Wayne Stanley and Sergeant Marlon Bishop and conducted by WPC Kernisha Valere, all of the Child Protection Unit (CPU). The investigation was also assisted by Ag. Director of Counter Trafficking Unit, Kimoy Thomas, and its Officers, members of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and the Cyber Crime Unit (CCU). |
