UPDATE (13/03/24): The driver, said to be a teenager, succumbed to his injuries at Hospital.

According to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, Roadway Surveillance Unit (RSU), over the last six (6) weeks, ten (10) pedestrian deaths have occurred, accounting for 59% of this years’ road traffic deaths. These pedestrian deaths are evenly distributed, with half occurring on both Highways and Main Roads. Police Road Traffic Safety Coordinator, Sgt. Brent Batson, noted that what was most concerning was that 50% of the road traffic deaths involving pedestrians occurred along Main Roads. These roads have 50 Km/h speed limits, which are speeds that are generally associated with non-fatal injuries where pedestrian involved road traffic accidents are concerned. The data suggests drivers have migrated their speeding habits to Main Roads without care or consideration to other road users. Senior Superintendent of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, David Powder, expressed disappointment with the road traffic death figures as his officers have been enforcing road traffic laws consistently in efforts to help keep the roadways safe, with Highway Patrol Officers having issued over 4,800 traffic tickets to errant motorists for the year, of which 36% being issued for exceeding roadway speed limits. “We all have our roles to play in keeping the roads safe, drivers and other road users need to understand how risk-taking can quickly lead to unplanned outcomes including injuries and death on the roads.” The road death count for 2024 is now seventeen (17), compared to eighteen (18) for the same period last year — representing a 5% decrease. A pedestrian is dead following a hit-and-run road traffic accident along the Audrey Jeffers Highway in Cocorite early Friday morning (8th March, 2024). The deceased has not yet been identified. According to reports, the victim was crossing along the Westbound lane of the Audrey Jeffers Highway, just before the foreshore lookout, around 5:00 AM on Friday, when he was struck by a vehicle, which continued on its way. Motorists observed the body in the middle of the roadway and notified the Police. They also turned on their hazard lights and blocked the body with their vehicles to prevent others from rolling over it. Officers from the Western Division responded to the scene along with a District Medical Officer (DMO), who viewed the body, made their pronouncement and ordered it removed.
This is said to be the 14th fatal road traffic accident for the year thus far. A similar hit-and-run incident took place on Sunday 3rd March, 2024, when 64-year-old Ramoutar Ramroop of Rochard Douglas Road in Barrackpore died after he was struck by a vehicle near his home. The driver fled the scene. Investigations are continuing. More on this as it becomes available. [Source: Ian Alleyne] |
