A 7-year-old boy was severely injured after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a Police Officer in Tobago last Thursday (14th March, 2024). The victim has been identified as Rahim Lewis.
According to reports, Rahim was attempting to cross the Main Road in Hope, Tobago, when he was hit by a speeding Mazda pick-up and thrown several feet into the air.
The boy was subsequently taken to the Scarborough General Hospital where he is expected to undergo facial reconstruction, and hand, back and head surgeries when the swelling subsides.
Meanwhile, Rahim’s father, Sean Lewis, has called for a fair and thorough investigation. He has also appealed to the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) in Trinidad to intervene and ensure the investigation remained unbiased. Sean said the incident has left his son severely injured. “I am not here looking for a handout. I just want a fair hearing for the youth. I understand accidents do happen and yes people have a lot to say but I just want a fair hearing,” he said. CCTV footage of the incident shows the boy looking left and right before walking across the road to meet his mother. However, moments later he was hit and flung several feet into the air by a vehicle which appeared to be coming at a speed. Investigations are continuing into this incident.
