The Trinidad and Tobago Regiment (TTR) said it is aware of the reported road traffic accident which occurred on Thursday (28th March 2024), along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, involving a service person and a civilian.
In a Media Release today (Friday 29th March, 2024), the Regiment said, on learning of the incident, “the TTR has been assiduously assisting the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) with this matter and can confirm that the service person involved has voluntarily turned himself in under the supervision of a competent military authority, exhibiting full co-operation with the TTPS, as investigations continue.”
The TTR notes that, “as an institution committed to upholding the highest standards of responsibility and accountability, would also like to reiterate our unwavering commitment to safety, both on and off duty. Incidents such as this are taken seriously, and all members of the Regiment are reminded of the importance of responsible conduct at all times.”
Neil Ballai, 55, of Eccles Trace, Spring Village, Valsayn, died at the scene of the crash after his Kiss truck was struck from behind by a black Hyundai Ioniq sedan, driven by the TTR service person, identified as Jelani Mapp of Erica Street in Laventille.
Dash-cam footage of the crash shows the sedan swerving between lanes and smashing into the rear of the delivery truck, sending it careening into a ditch off the Highway. The Isuzu truck landed on its side, pinning Ballai, the driver. Riding along with him in the truck was 34-year-old Terrance Jagasar, of Cumuto Main Road, Cumuto. He sustained injuries and was attended to by Emergency Health Services personnel before being transported to the Couva Health Facility for further medical treatment. The black Hyundai Ioniq, however, did not stop to render assistance to the occupants of the Kiss truck — it continued traveling along the Highway.
