The White House announced on Monday (26th April 2021) that as many as 60 Million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be available to ship around the World in the coming months, once it clears federal safety reviews. White House Officials on Monday declined to say which countries would receive the doses, with Press Secretary Jen Psaki instead saying the U.S dose-sharing initiative is in the “planning stages.” AstraZeneca's vaccine is not yet authorized for use in the U.S - but is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is approved in more than fifty (50) countries. In a statement released on Monday evening, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) said Prime Minister and CARICOM Chairman, Keith Rowley, wrote U.S President Joseph Biden on 19th March 2021, asking the U.S to share its surplus vaccines with the region. President Biden, in his response, confirmed the United States’ commitment to partnering with COVAX and other multinational institutions to ensure the equitable distribution of vaccines. According to the OPM, “On 25 March 2021 and again on 7 April 2021, Dr. Rowley met with U.S Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services. One of the key issues discussed at these meetings was the need for the equitable distribution of vaccines.” On 19 April 2021, the Prime Minister held talks with Elizabeth Cameron, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Global Health Security and Biodefense at The White House, to “again highlight the critical need for the region to have an adequate and urgent supply of vaccines.” The OPM further noted, “In all these meetings, the Chairman of CARICOM raised our heightened concerns about the increased danger posed by the almost inevitable possibility of variants of the COVID-19 virus developing or entering within our regional territories.” A commitment was received that once the policy of re-distribution is readied, CARICOM will not be ignored. See the Prime Minister’s letter to U.S President Joe Biden below: 19 March 2021 See the response letter sent by U.S President Joe Biden to Prime Minister Keith Rowley below: THE WHITE HOUSE The U.S has about 10 Million completed doses of AstraZeneca in stock, but they need to go through safety inspections first. Another 50 Million doses are expected to be ready in May or June and could ship after it passes inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Both Mexico and Canada received small shipments last month from the U.S and those countries have since asked for more. Meanwhile, the Biden administration on Monday committed to sending India raw materials for making vaccines, but has not said whether it will send actual shots. Fewer than 10% of people in India have received even one dose. U.S Officials also said they were exploring options to urgently dispatch oxygen and related supplies to India. The country is running out of oxygen and is seeing hundreds of thousands of new cases per day. India reported 352,991 new cases on Monday, marking the fifth consecutive day the country set a global record for a single-day rise in infections. The Ministry of Health is advising the public that the P1 COVID-19 variant (Brazilian variant) has been detected in five (5) additional COVID-19 positive samples in Trinidad and Tobago. In a Media Release on Monday afternoon (26th April 2021), the Ministry states the Variants of Concern (VOC) were detected in cases from: St. George Central (3) and St. George West (2). All five (5) cases are T&T Nationals. The Ministry further states that all Contact Tracing and isolation procedures are in progress, and are being managed by the relevant County Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) with the aim of reducing the spread of this Variant of Concern. This brings the total local number of confirmed COVID-19 positive samples of the P1 variant to nine (9). According to the Ministry, it is important to note that the cases have no epidemiological link to each other and were identified in varying geographical locations in Trinidad and Tobago. “The COVID-19 vaccine is just one part of the overall tool kit that should be used to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, in general, and the Variants of Concern.” The Ministry emphasizes that all of the personal protective measures such as mask wearing must also be followed, even by persons who have already received the COVID-19 vaccine. Public adherence to the following public health measures is therefore critical:
Three (3) cases of this Brazilian variant were announced just last week, on 23rd April 2021 - two (2) were T&T Nationals and the other was a Non-National. One (1) sample came from a person under the age of eighteen (18) years. The Brazilian variant was first discovered in the country on 19th April 2021. That sample was taken from a COVID-19 positive patient in the Nariva/Mayaro County. In addition, the Ministry recently announced a second confirmed case of the UK variant (B117) was also discovered in T&T. The UK variant was recorded in a repatriated T&T National who came from the United States. The patient was isolated in the parallel healthcare system.
