Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, released a statement on Wednesday (28th April 2021) highlighting the fact that the Minister of Heath, Terrence Deyalsingh, revealed in the Senate recently that the Brazilian variant got into Trinidad and Tobago via a migrant. She said, “this shows clearly that this Government has failed to secure our borders.” She continued in her statement, “Our borders have been closed for well over a year, yet cases are now rising, and Minister Deyalsingh and newly appointed National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds were at pains last week trying to deny that the P1 variant entered the country because of our porous borders.” Mrs. Persad-Bissessar said that citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are concerned with what measures are being taken to protect them, “as it is clear that this Rowley-led administration is doing nothing to secure our borders.” She also touched on the fact that apart from illegal migrants coming into the country, we are seeing large shipments of illegal weapons and ammunition getting in through legal Ports of Entry, which the Opposition Leader said is “alarming.” She called on the Government to stop playing politics and games and “get down to the serious business of getting this security crisis under control.” See the Opposition Leader’s full statement below: Tell The Truth for Once, Lives are Depending on it

In a News Release on Wednesday (28th April 2021), the Ministry of Education confirmed that the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) Exam will in fact be held on 10th June 2021 - a date which was first announced in November 2020. In arriving at this decision, the Ministry said it consulted with key stakeholders, including the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA), principals, teachers, parents and students. There had been calls by various groups to either postpone the SEA Exam to a later date, or cancel it entirely due to the dangers involved with the dramatic rising of COVID-19 cases in the country. For the month of April, there have been more than 2,000 new recorded cases in T&T - including nine (9) with the highly-transmissible Brazilian variant. The Ministry noted, “While the prevailing view is that students would benefit from a few weeks of face to face preparation before the examimation, and consideration was given to postponement to possibly facilitate this, the fact is that there is no certainty of that becoming a reality, even if the examination were to be postponed.” The Ministry said it is also mindful of the lessons learned from the conduct and administration of the SEA Exam in 2020, “where the best efforts to provide face to face preparation sessions for our students were aborted due to the continued spread of COVID-19.” Results from this year’s SEA Exam are expected to be released mid-August to facilitate the placement of students into secondary schools for the commencement of the September term. Police raided a warehouse in Couva on Monday morning (26th April 2021) and discovered several guns and a large quantity of ammunition of various calibres. This follows last week’s major discovery of high-powered guns, ammunition, and equipment by Police and Customs during a raid at a Bond at Piarco International Airport on 22nd April 2021. These two (2) large seizures of guns and ammunition has many wondering if these were intended to be used in another coup d'état attempt in Trinidad and Tobago. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), around 9pm on Sunday (25th April 2021), intelligence was received by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) which suggested that a container with household appliances was imported into Trinidad. The intelligence revealed that this shipment was housed at a warehouse situated off the Southern Main Road, Mc Bean, Couva. Intelligence suggested that the said items entered the country sometime around the end of February. The SIU, acting on additional intelligence and in collaboration with the Central Gang Intelligence Team and the Customs and Excise Division, commenced an operation to identify the items contained in the said container. The TTPS notes that around 7am on Monday (26th April 2021), personnel from the SIU proceeded to the warehouse where the container was retrieved and an examination conducted. The following items were discovered concealed in the container:
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence and Investigations), Mc Donald Jacob, thanked the various units for their continued commitment in ridding the streets of these weapons. He said the two (2) recent seizures show that weapons and ammunition are coming through the legal Ports of Entry. Mr. Jacob said with the recent formation of the Central Intelligence Bureau (CIB) and with the co-operation of the public, the TTPS continues to conduct intelligence-led exercises throughout the country.
