In a News Release on Wednesday (28th April 2021), the Ministry of Education confirmed that the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) Exam will in fact be held on 10th June 2021 - a date which was first announced in November 2020. In arriving at this decision, the Ministry said it consulted with key stakeholders, including the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA), principals, teachers, parents and students. There had been calls by various groups to either postpone the SEA Exam to a later date, or cancel it entirely due to the dangers involved with the dramatic rising of COVID-19 cases in the country. For the month of April, there have been more than 2,000 new recorded cases in T&T - including nine (9) with the highly-transmissible Brazilian variant. The Ministry noted, “While the prevailing view is that students would benefit from a few weeks of face to face preparation before the examimation, and consideration was given to postponement to possibly facilitate this, the fact is that there is no certainty of that becoming a reality, even if the examination were to be postponed.” The Ministry said it is also mindful of the lessons learned from the conduct and administration of the SEA Exam in 2020, “where the best efforts to provide face to face preparation sessions for our students were aborted due to the continued spread of COVID-19.” Results from this year’s SEA Exam are expected to be released mid-August to facilitate the placement of students into secondary schools for the commencement of the September term.
