Police raided a warehouse in Couva on Monday morning (26th April 2021) and discovered several guns and a large quantity of ammunition of various calibres. This follows last week’s major discovery of high-powered guns, ammunition, and equipment by Police and Customs during a raid at a Bond at Piarco International Airport on 22nd April 2021. These two (2) large seizures of guns and ammunition has many wondering if these were intended to be used in another coup d'état attempt in Trinidad and Tobago. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), around 9pm on Sunday (25th April 2021), intelligence was received by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) which suggested that a container with household appliances was imported into Trinidad. The intelligence revealed that this shipment was housed at a warehouse situated off the Southern Main Road, Mc Bean, Couva. Intelligence suggested that the said items entered the country sometime around the end of February. The SIU, acting on additional intelligence and in collaboration with the Central Gang Intelligence Team and the Customs and Excise Division, commenced an operation to identify the items contained in the said container. The TTPS notes that around 7am on Monday (26th April 2021), personnel from the SIU proceeded to the warehouse where the container was retrieved and an examination conducted. The following items were discovered concealed in the container:
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence and Investigations), Mc Donald Jacob, thanked the various units for their continued commitment in ridding the streets of these weapons. He said the two (2) recent seizures show that weapons and ammunition are coming through the legal Ports of Entry. Mr. Jacob said with the recent formation of the Central Intelligence Bureau (CIB) and with the co-operation of the public, the TTPS continues to conduct intelligence-led exercises throughout the country.
