The Ministry of Health is advising the public that the P1 COVID-19 variant (Brazilian variant) has been detected in five (5) additional COVID-19 positive samples in Trinidad and Tobago. In a Media Release on Monday afternoon (26th April 2021), the Ministry states the Variants of Concern (VOC) were detected in cases from: St. George Central (3) and St. George West (2). All five (5) cases are T&T Nationals. The Ministry further states that all Contact Tracing and isolation procedures are in progress, and are being managed by the relevant County Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) with the aim of reducing the spread of this Variant of Concern. This brings the total local number of confirmed COVID-19 positive samples of the P1 variant to nine (9). According to the Ministry, it is important to note that the cases have no epidemiological link to each other and were identified in varying geographical locations in Trinidad and Tobago. “The COVID-19 vaccine is just one part of the overall tool kit that should be used to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, in general, and the Variants of Concern.” The Ministry emphasizes that all of the personal protective measures such as mask wearing must also be followed, even by persons who have already received the COVID-19 vaccine. Public adherence to the following public health measures is therefore critical:
Three (3) cases of this Brazilian variant were announced just last week, on 23rd April 2021 - two (2) were T&T Nationals and the other was a Non-National. One (1) sample came from a person under the age of eighteen (18) years. The Brazilian variant was first discovered in the country on 19th April 2021. That sample was taken from a COVID-19 positive patient in the Nariva/Mayaro County. In addition, the Ministry recently announced a second confirmed case of the UK variant (B117) was also discovered in T&T. The UK variant was recorded in a repatriated T&T National who came from the United States. The patient was isolated in the parallel healthcare system.
