Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs, Fitzgerald Hinds, is piloting a new “Trespass Bill” in Parliament which seeks to update very old legislation from 1932.
According to the T&T Guardian: Provisions now being added will outlaw forcible entry by culprits who use threats, force or intimidation to enter a property, expel the occupant and take over the property. It also applies to the situation where the legitimate occupant has been forced out.
Minister Hinds remarked in Parliament that people were being terrorised and pressured by rogue elements to vacate their properties (including HDC Developments) - and the criminals were going unpunished. He said people have been forced out, some killed and burnt, and there has been under-reporting of the situation due to fear and lack of laws to deal with it.
The current legislation for trespassing was last amended back in 1932 and carried fines as low as $200.

Following the release of Jerry O’Brien last week, the remaining five (5) T&T Fishermen have been released from Venezuela early this morning. The men were all kidnapped by “Venezuelan Pirates” on 27th January 2019 and a ransom demand of US $200,000 was made.
Lynton Manohar (35), Jason O'Brien (38), Brandon Arjoon (28), Jagdesh jaikeran (17) and Rickey Rambharose (49), all of Morne Diablo, Penal were sent back to Trinidad on a Pirogue. Upon arrival, the men were taken to the Siparia Health Facility for medical examinations.
Police confirmed the men appear to be unharmed - which means social media images showing they were brutally mutilated were false.
It is alleged the family of the Fishermen sold their boats, engines and a van to raise money for the ransom. It is unclear if the total amount was paid off. This is a developing story - stay tuned for updates. [Source: CNC3]
Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, has confirmed to Guardian Media earlier this week that a fifth person has died in T&T from Swine Flu. The latest victim is a woman who was just 16 weeks pregnant.
Minister Deyalsingh also said that apart from the five (5) confirmed deaths there were other fatalities which were suspected to have been caused by H1N1 (Swine Flu). However, these cases are still unconfirmed as blood samples have been sent for testing.
The Health Ministry recently confirmed that an additional 20,000 Influenza Vaccines have arrived for distribution to various Health Facilities across T&T.
Minister Deyalsingh is urging members of the public to get the Influenza Vaccine as he has noticed a decline in interest over the past few weeks. This may have been due to a recent segment ran by a Media House on the side effects of the Vaccine on pregnant women. [Source] |
