According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) today (Monday 30th January 2023), last night’s minimum temperature went down to a chilly 18.3°C, as recorded at Piarco, Trinidad and 21°C at Crown Point, Tobago.
The Met Office states that it is, in fact, winter in the Northern Hemisphere and low minimum temperatures in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean are expected at this time of the year. The cold weather systems from the Northern temperate regions normally intrude further into the tropics and have an influence on temperatures across the Caribbean. According to the climate records at Piarco, Trinidad, the coolest minimum temperatures are normally recorded in January and February. For the 30-year climatic period from 1981, the extreme minimum temperatures on record for January is 17.7°C and for February is 17.4°C. The lowest minimum temperature on record at Piarco, is 16.1°C, which occurred on the nights of 21st January and 30th January 1964, followed by 16.4°C on the night of 28th January 1976. The Met Office notes that night-times are usually much cooler because there is no sunlight energy to balance the atmospheric heat loss, and the maximum accumulative heat loss is just before dawn. In the particular instance of cooling over the past few days, because of the interaction of an area of low pressure situated in the mid-North Atlantic, together with a cold frontal system moving from West to East, this has allowed a wind flow from the North to intrude into the North-Eastern Caribbean, bringing cooler air deeper into our area. This cooler air, together with generally clear skies, has allowed greater atmospheric cooling to take place and therefore lower night-time and pre-dawn temperatures. It is expected that by Thursday night (2nd February 2023), we can experience less chilly night-time temperatures as there is forecast to be a veering of the general wind flow to become more Easterly. During February it is still expected that relatively cooler minimum temperatures can be experienced. The TTMS said it has been alerting on its social media updates that cooler to chilly night-time to pre-dawn temperatures are expected. Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS.

Yet another life was lost in the waters of Tyrico Bay, which is located off the North Coast Road, just after Maracas Bay. The latest drowning at Tyrico Bay occurred yesterday afternoon (Sunday 29th January 2023). It is the third since December and second for this month.
The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Vishnu Ramroop. According to reports, Ramroop was seen getting into difficulty while bathing shortly after 2:00 PM on Sunday afternoon, following which he disappeared below the waves. His friends and other beach-goers tried to rescue him but were unsuccessful. Police said his body was spotted floating in the water around 4:30 PM. It was retrieved and taken to the Port-of-Spain Mortuary. A post-mortem is expected to be performed later this week at the Forensic Science Centre, Federation Park. [Source: Trinidad Express] The weekend has indeed been an unwelcomed one, with reports of at least eleven (11) murders, including the discovery of three (3) bullet-riddled bodies in a car in Carapo, three (3) shot dead in Cunupia, and in a third unrelated incident, skeletal remains were found in a vehicle in Claxton Bay which had been set ablaze.
However, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said in a Media Release on Sunday (29th January 2023) that it “continues to work assiduously to investigate the recent murders, pursuing several strong leads.” According to the TTPS, “As it relates to the Central Division murders, our early indicators suggest there are connecting features, which suggest that the same group of individuals are responsible for these acts. Our investigators are pursuing further leads.” As it relates to the triple murders in Carapo, the TTPS notes that gang activities in that area “continue to engage our attention and we are pursuing certain leads.” In the North Eastern Division, which includes Morvant and Blanchisseuse, the TTPS said their information indicates these murders “were as a result of disputes between community members. Our investigators are working feverishly on the ground to bring the perpetrators to justice.” With respect to the burnt body in the vehicle at Claxton Bay, the body remains unidentified, however, the TTPS said preliminary investigations revealed that the said vehicle was reported stolen earlier this month, from the Eastern Division. Meanwhile, investigators are currently working with relatives to ascertain a possible motive for the report of homicide in the Sangre Grande district, where the victim was a businessman. The TTPS added, “The prevalence of illegal guns in our communities is a central focus of the Service and the Commissioner of Police, Ag. Erla Christopher, is directing strategies, targeting the influx of firearms.” Acting Commissioner Christopher said, “We are not daunted by the unfortunate and disturbing spate of violence over this weekend. We will continue to intensify our crackdown on gangs to break the hold of the deadly gang culture and criminality, that leaves a trail of death and despair within our communities. What we may be witnessing is the storm before the calm, as the TTPS will continue to use its resources to supress these gangs and other criminal activities. We will not stop applying pressure on those who are determined to disrupt and strike fear in the lives of all law-abiding citizens. We will keep up the fight. God's willing, we will succeed.” A gruesome discovery was made last night (Saturday 28th January 2023) after Fire Officers extinguished a vehicle that was on fire in the Claxton Bay area. Colm Imbert, MP, is advising that the latest statistics for actual economic growth for 2022, published by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) on its website, as it continues to refine its data, are better than previously estimated.
In a Media Release on Friday (27th January 2023), Minister Imbert said that instead of a decline of -0.1% in Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Trinidad and Tobago in the first quarter of 2022, as previously estimated by the CSO, “the CSO has now advised that our economy actually grew by 1.6% in that quarter. Further, according to the CSO, Real GDP grew by a substantial 6.6% in the second quarter of 2022. This means that for the first half of 2022, according to the CSO, Real GDP grew by a heathy 4.1%, almost twice the growth figure previously estimated for that period.” The Minister added, “What is interesting and encouraging in the latest data published by the CSO, is that it indicates that the non-energy sector experienced Real GDP growth of 4.6% in the first quarter of 2022 and Real GDP growth of 10.5% in the second quarter of 2022, yielding strong economic growth in the non-energy sector of 7.5% in the first half of 2022. This data demonstrates that our economy is recovering from the ravages of the COVID-19 Pandemic and that our diversification efforts are bearing fruit.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “The data also indicates that our nominal GDP, which is used to calculate our Debt-to-GDP ratio, is also better than previously estimated. In fact, preliminary calculations indicate that nominal GDP for Trinidad and Tobago in the first half of 2022 was $3 billion more than previously calculated.” Pictured Above: Jesse John, 32.
