The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily COVID-19 update this afternoon (Thursday 26th August 2021) that there are 212 new COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago plus six (6) additional deaths. The number of new cases represents a 9.28% increase in reported cases from yesterday. These new patients will be processed for admission at the discretion of the CMOHs.
There have been 4,939 new cases and 181 deaths so far in the month of August. The Ministry reported 194 new cases yesterday plus eight (8) more unfortunate deaths. The country’s death toll has increased to 1,258. T&T’s total positive cases now rises to 43,750, with 4,838 being active cases. A total of 37,654 patients have recovered from the virus to date. 4,240 persons are in home self-isolation and there are 161 persons in total at State quarantine facilities. A total of 498,016 persons have been partially vaccinated with a first dose and 381,791 have been fully vaccinated (including single-dose Johnson & Johnson). The Ministry states that the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during the period 22nd - 25th August 2021 and not the last 24 hours. The Ministry also notes that there are currently 283 COVID-19 positive patients being treated at Hospitals and 103 patients are in step-down/transition facilities across T&T. Additional details related to today’s COVID-19 update can be found on the Ministry’s website as soon as it’s available. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. A Government motion to extend the State of Emergency (SoE) by a further ninety (90) days, until 30th November 2021, was eventually passed in Parliament yesterday (Wednesday 25th August 2021). The motion, which required only Government votes, passed with a vote of twenty-one (21) for on the Government’s side, none against and eighteen (18) abstentions from the Opposition’s side. Prime Minister Keith Rowley gave the assurance in the House of Representatives yesterday that the Government intends to discontinue the SoE at the first and earliest opportunity, once it would not increase the COVID-19 risk to the population. He said the only reason for the extension is to prevent further spread of the virus and discourage persons from congregating and socializing at night. “At the end of the day, we want to be able to preserve lives and keep Hospitals from overflowing, keep doctors and nurses from being overworked and keep people at the jobs they’ve been allowed to return to.” He also added, “I want to give this assurance that at the first opportunity that is medically safe and encouraged, this Government will discontinue this SoE, even if Parliament approves this SoE for 90 days, where it’s reasonable to do so without exposing the population, we’ll end it right then and there.” The Prime Minister spoke against a background of horn-tooting by motorists who were protesting the extension as they passed the Red House. A group of people also protested on the pavement outside the building. Protest noises could be heard inside the Parliament chamber. UNC and Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, previously called for people to protest against the proposed extension with horn-tooting and headlight-flashing. Apart from outside of Parliament, protests occurred in Fyzabad; Avocat; certain Curepe locations; Munroe Road, Chaguanas; Penal and parts of San Fernando. P.M Rowley noted that when the Government looked at where Trinidad and Tobago is right now, after the initial ninety (90) days, it is not at a point to dispense with the SoE. “If we do that, it’s more likely the responses from the public will see us having higher community spread, leading to another phase of activity which will force Government to take firmer action,” he said. The Ministry of Health is advising the population that at 6:09pm last night (Wednesday 25th August 2021), two (2) additional cases of the COVID-19 Delta Variant of Concern (VOC) were confirmed. Therefore, Trinidad and Tobago has now confirmed five (5) cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant to date.
The first two (2) cases of the Delta variant were confirmed on 11th August 2021 and a third case was confirmed a few days later, on 15th August 2021. According to the Ministry, the fourth and fifth patients recently returned to Trinidad from the United States and Guyana respectively. As per existing quarantine protocols. both persons provided negative PCR tests (which were taken 72 hours prior to arrival). As a result of their positive COVID-19 results from swabs taken after arrival, both patients were isolated at a State step-down facility. The patients will remain in isolation until they meet the enhanced discharge criteria for persons with COVID-19 Variants of Concern. The presence of the Delta variants were confirmed via gene sequencing at the laboratory of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies. Research has suggested that the Delta variant is more easily spread from person to person, as compared to previous variants (estimated to be 2 to 4 times more transmissible than the original Wuhan linage of the virus). Additionally, evidence indicates that individuals who have contracted this variant may be prone to an increase of severe illness and hospitalization. This variant may also lead to an increase in cases of COVID-19 in younger age groups and in those who have been previously infected. The Ministry is reminding the population of the “importance of being vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus as soon as possible.” Additionally, members of the public are reminded to follow all of the recommended personal health protective measures, even if they are fully vaccinated:
The Ministry notes that WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccines “are safe, they are effective and they are available in Trinidad and Tobago.” The public is encouraged to visit the Ministry's website (www.health.gov.tt) and social media pages, as well as those of the Regional Health Authorities for further information on COVID-19 vaccination. Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s virtual Press Conference this morning (Wednesday 25th August 2021), Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, indicated that the Ministry is observing ongoing trials internationally of vaccines in children younger than twelve (12) years of age. He noted that they will wait for clearance from the World Health Organization (WHO) before any such vaccine is administered to the local population. “There are vaccines that are under trial under 12, for example, the Sinopharm vaccine which we have in Trinidad and Tobago, Pfizer vaccine and Moderna vaccine are being trialled at this point in time in different jurisdictions for use between the ages 3 and 17 years of age,” he said. The CMO added that, “The Sinopharm vaccine has also been given emergency use authorization in China as well as the United Arab Emirates most recently and…is in the process of going before WHO for approval in that age group. Once of course WHO approves that then we will have that available for that particular age group and that vulnerable group of 3 - 17.” This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
