Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, revealed at a Press Conference yesterday (Saturday 28th August 2021) that three (3) fully vaccinated people have died from COVID-19 since 8th June 2021. He noted that in general, the more severe cases occur in unvaccinated people.
According to Dr. Parasram, "A couple weeks ago, right at the Prime Minister's conference, we would have said we had one case of a person that was significantly immunocompromised at the time, and he had passed away fully vaccinated. Since June 8 to present, we have 668 deaths." He continued to explain, "Of those, we have three persons, all of which had severe (I would say) co-morbidities, which would have been antecedent to some extent to the cause of death. But we have three fully vaccinated persons of the 668, giving us a percent of 0.45% of all deaths that would have been vaccinated, meaning of all the cases that would have died from June 8 to present (668), 99.45% were unvaccinated (which is what the data tells us across the World)."

Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, announced at a Press Conference this afternoon (Saturday 28th August 2021) that healthcare workers and teachers will now be eligible for the Pfizer vaccine, as these doses will expire in November. "We need to use half of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines received, by mid to late October, at the latest," he said.
Minister Deyalsingh also hinted at the possibility that the Pfizer vaccines may be opened to the general public before they expire in November - depending on how the roll-out goes with healthcare workers and teachers.
The Minister noted that at least 25% of the eligible school-age population has been vaccinated so far and he emphasized that children will still remain a priority for the Pfizer vaccines. Minister Deyalsingh also said we are 5% - 10% off pace regarding vaccination numbers in the country. By now, we should have had 525,000 - 530,000 people receiving their first dose. However, we currently have 503,000 people with their first dose.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keith Rowley said he is disappointed that there has not been a higher uptake in the available vaccines. He said Trinidad and Tobago has not met the target which it set out at the end of August.

Prime Minister Keith Rowley held a Press Conference at 2:30pm this afternoon (Saturday 28th August 2021) to update the public on the latest decisions made by Government with respect to COVID-19 restrictions in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Prime Minister Keith Rowley announced that from 1st October 2021, face-to-face schooling will be available for vaccinated children in Forms 4, 5 and 6. The Prime Minister indicated that these children will be required to be fully vaccinated, therefore needing to receive their second dose by 14th - 17th September 2021. - P.M Rowley also announced that once the Government determines that the re-opening of the retail sector does not lead to a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, places of worship will be able to re-open around 6th September 2021 with some limitations. - Principal Medical Officer of Institutions, Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards, stated that a worrying trend is being observed, where increasing numbers of children are being hospitalized with COVID-19. Dr. Richards shared that ten (10) children are currently hospitalized with eight (8) at the Ward level, one (1) at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) level and one (1) at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) level. - Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, stated that to date, 503,239 persons have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, making up 36% of the population, with 389,317 receiving both doses. 1,063 persons have received a single-dose vaccine, putting the total number of completed vaccinations at 390,380, which makes up 28% of the population. - Minister Deyalsingh announced that 25% of the eligible school population have been vaccinated to date, however, the Minister also noted that the daily number of children being vaccinated has decreased significantly. Minister Deyalsingh appealed to parents to take advantage of the opportunity and get their children vaccinated. - The Health Minister also announced that the Pfizer vaccine will now be open to healthcare workers and teachers, in order to give them another option. He explained that this move was to ensure that these vaccines don't go to waste, as they are expiring in November. Children however, are still the top priority for the Pfizer. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) just announced that Prime Minister Keith Rowley will host a Press Conference today (Saturday 28th August 2021) at 2:30pm at the Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s. What can we expect? Since the State of Emergency was first announced on 15th May 2021, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded a staggering 28,100 new cases and 991 deaths. The Government was able to pass the motion in Parliament on Wednesday (25th August 2021) to extend the State of Emergency by a further ninety (90) days, until 30th November 2021. The Ministry of Health reported 249 new cases yesterday along with nine (9) more unfortunate deaths. The country’s death toll has reached 1,267. The record for the most daily cases was set on 21st May 2021 with 708 cases and the record for most daily deaths was set on 18th May 2021 with twenty-three (23) deaths. There have been 5,188 new cases and 190 deaths so far in the month of August. The highly-transmissible and deadly Delta variant was confirmed in T&T on 11th August 2021 by the Ministry - with the first two (2) cases being recorded. There have since been three (3) additional confirmed cases, bringing the total to five (5). Prime Minister Rowley last hosted a Press Conference on 14th August 2021, exactly two (2) weeks ago, where he announced that the restrictions on personal services (barbers, hairdressers, nail technicians, domestic workers) will be lifted on 23rd August 2021. P.M Rowley encouraged persons working in this sector to get vaccinated if they haven't already. He also announced that along with the retail sector, CEPEP and URP workers will be allowed to go back to work from 16th August 2021. All NLCB booths were opened on 9th August 2021. All restaurants and food services re-opened on 19th July 2021 for curbside pickup, takeout, delivery, and drive-through only. Restricted outdoor activity, in groups of five (5) or less with physical distancing in place, was also allowed from that date. Team sport, however, was not given the green light. The Government also increased the public transport capacity from 50% to 75% and the entire manufacturing sector was re-opened on 12th July 2021, along with car dealerships. What will Prime Minister Rowley announce today? Given the Delta variant is now present in the country and vaccination levels are still not where they ought to be, it is unclear which direction the Prime Minister will choose - keep the status quo as-is, or continue to re-open other sectors of the economy. We are expected to find out more details today about the continuing vaccination roll-out. The Prime Minister will also heavily focus on the distribution plan of the Pfizer vaccines to eligible school children. The Ministry of Education announced recently that schools will NOT physically re-open on 6th September 2021. Instead, virtual classes are set to continue at the start of the new school year. However, the Prime Minister is hoping that if enough school children are inoculated soon, Forms 4, 5 and 6 may be able to return physically to school at a date as yet to be determined. What do you think the Prime Minister will announce today? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.

It has been confirmed that a second child suffered a “very mild” adverse reaction to the Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine. The child was diagnosed with Pericarditis, which is the inflammation of the pericardium, a sac-like structure with two (2) thin layers of tissue that surrounds the heart to hold it in place and helps it to function. The first case of an adverse reaction to the Pfizer vaccine was 17-year-old Tahirah Mohammed, who experienced the rare reaction of Anaphylaxis. She had since said her reaction should not discourage people from getting their children vaccinated and she is looking forward to her second dose once she is given the all-clear by her doctors. According to Cardiologist Dr. Ronald Henry, the second child presented last week after complaining of persistent chest pains after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. Dr. Henry diagnosed and treated the child. Speaking to Guardian Media on Thursday (26th August 2021), he said, “The usual markers that we do – blood tests and ECGs (electrocardiogram) and so—all were actually quite fine, which told us this was a mild case that did not go on to produce any deep tissue damage.” Dr. Henry then prescribed some anti-inflammatory medication for the child and said the symptoms resolved “promptly,” as they typically do. He said the child was now doing well and isn’t expected to have any long-term effects of the condition. Dr. Henry assured that this was an extremely rare occurrence and if it does present itself, it is usually not serious. “Thankfully, when Pericarditis occurs following the Pfizer vaccine, which the statistics are approximately one in 100,000 cases…it’s typically in kids and typically mild and usually will respond quite promptly to the correctly prescribed medications,” he said.
