Acting Commissioner of Police, McDonald Jacob, is advising citizens that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has ramped up its efforts against persons who have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and who are in breach of their home quarantine order.
The TTPS has initiated a pilot project which will be used as a guide to determine the scale of operations needed to fully implement this system. The Acting CoP disclosed that Officers have started the process of flagging persons who are suspected of breaching their quarantine orders. The special Police teams will wear full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when they effect arrests of offenders. Otherwise, visits to verify compliance with quarantine continue to be performed by Officers who wear masks and gloves, while maintaining a safe distance. The special teams may be accompanied by Health Officials for the issuance of fresh orders in certain cases. To date, all of the persons who tested positive for COVID-19 and were flagged and visited by the special teams, have been found at their quarantine location. The Acting CoP advises citizens that Police Officers can enter premises without a warrant, to enforce compliance with the Quarantine Act and that the TTPS is prepared to prosecute those who breach the quarantine orders to the fullest extent of the law. Citizens are reminded that it is an offence under the Quarantine Act to break their quarantine and doing so carries a fine of TT $6,000 or six (6) months in prison. It is also an offence to give false information to an Official acting under the authority of the Act.

With days left now before the U.S Election on 3rd November 2020, President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden participated in the second (and final) 2020 Presidential Debate last night (Thursday 22nd October 2020) at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Both candidates clashed over a variety of issues, including COVID-19, in a seemingly calmer and less combative Presidential Debate this time around when compared to their first, which was three (3) weeks ago. The pair traded accusations about their personal ethics and questioned each other’s records on economic, racial-justice, health care and immigration in their final meeting before Election Day. Their microphones were muted at times during the Debate. It came after more than 47 Million Americans, more than a third of the total 2016 vote, already had cast ballots. President Trump was optimistic about having a vaccine for COVID-19 by the end of 2020, while former Vice President Joe Biden said there is no prospect of a vaccine for the majority of Americans before mid-2021. It’s safe to say that Jamaican Dancehall Artist, Buju Banton, is firmly in the ‘anti-mask-wearing’ camp. Buju posted a video on Instagram on Wednesday (21st October 2020) to his 1.2 Million followers in which he spoke directly to Jamaicans about the policy of mask-wearing in his country. However, to the dismay and outrage of many fans, his message was not to encourage them to protect themselves and others by wearing a face mask, but instead he chastised mask-wearing, calling it “bullshit” and even boldly declaring, “who fi dead ah go dead,” “me nuh wear nuh mask” and “mask nuh make for man.” He challenged the Jamaican people to “wake up” and questioned why the “intellectual fools” who are so smart, have not found a cure for Cancer. At the end of the video he shouted, “free my people, now!” Jamaica recorded 155 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday along with five (5) more deaths. The country has reached 8,600 total cases with 179 deaths to date.

The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Wednesday 21st October 2020) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today: - Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, provided data on the timeline of acute viral illnesses this year. The data shows that there has been a gradual decrease in the incidence of viral illness in recent times and Dr. Parasram indicated that the current levels are quite low and manageable. - General Manager for Primary Care Services at the NCRHA, Dr. Abdul Hamid, shared information on the Ministry of Health’s Telemedicine Initiative. Dr. Hamid stated that primary care doctors will call patients prior to their clinic dates to identify those with compromised immune systems and uncontrollable diabetes and conduct extensive counselling with these persons to ensure that they do not have to physically come in to the clinic. These at-risk patients have their prescriptions automatically renewed and their relatives or designated persons can collect the pre-packaged medication in their stead. - Dr. Hamid also indicated that in the last five (5) weeks, over 5,000 patients have benefited from Telemedicine consults from the NCRHA’s primary healthcare and that compliance when it comes to collecting medicine has also seen an increase due to this initiative.
