Prime Minister Keith Rowley held a Press Conference at 2pm this afternoon (Saturday 24th October 2020) to update the public on the latest decisions made by Government with respect to COVID-19 restrictions in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today: - Prime Minister Keith Rowley announced several adjustments which will come into effect from Monday 26th October 2020, as follows:
- Gatherings of no more than ten (10) people remain in effect. - Mask wearing remains mandatory. - P.M Rowley reminded the national community that we are living in a Pandemic. He confirmed that he recently lost a close friend and neighbour to COVID-19. "When it comes home to you that closely, it is difficult to think of a number. I want to warn the national community not to get tired of responding properly to this Pandemic." - A committee comprising the Minister of National Security, Minister of Health, and Attorney General will be established to look at the possible removal of the exemption system to allow people to come home as flights become available. These repatriated persons will be able to quarantine at their homes and be monitored by Health Officials. The committee will report on this possibility by 2nd November 2020. - P.M Rowley confirmed that the repatriation exercise continues, but noted that these repatriated citizens are now accounting for about 10% of COVID-19 cases. He said this is why the inflow is being carefully managed. - National Security Minister Stuart Young later confirmed that 5,905 exemptions have been granted for persons to enter T&T (mostly from the U.S, U.K and Canada), and 8,046 exemptions were granted to leave T&T. - Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, said sixteen (16) new COVID-19 positive cases were recorded over the last 24 hours, with seven (7) of those cases coming from a repatriation flight from Barbados. One COVID-19 death was recorded overnight. - P.M Rowley congratulated the planners in the health sector and healthcare workers for their dedication throughout the Pandemic and urged citizens to continue doing their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. He noted that the health sector has been working non-stop since the start of the Pandemic. "They are humans, and they will get tired." - Minister Deyalsingh said T&T is once again in a "pretty good position" regarding its COVID-19 case load, with 30 or 40 cases on average per day. He said if T&T continues with 30 to 40 cases per day, it means one (1) to two (2) persons will die from the virus per day. He made an appeal for citizens to keep their elderly relatives safe since they are among the most vulnerable. - THA Health Secretary Tracy Davidson-Celestine confirmed that there are nineteen (19) active cases in Tobago. - Prime Minister Rowley hosted today’s Press Conference from Tobago, where he is marking his 71st birthday. A 42-year-old Cuban National is currently in Police custody after confessing he strangled his 32-year-old Venezuelan girlfriend to death on Thursday night (22nd October 2020). The woman, Johandry Espinosa, was killed in the gated community of Flagstaff in St. James in yet another tragic domestic violence case in this country. Neighbours in the vicinity of Block A, lamented that they believed the murder could have been prevented if they acted more as a family instead of opting to “mind their own business”. They said Thursday night was not the first time hearing the couple argue. Every other week you would hear them shouting at each other. According to Police reports, around 7:30pm on Thursday, Officers of the St. Clair Police Station received a report of domestic violence at Flagstaff. When they responded, they were met by the man, who informed them that he and his girlfriend had a “small fight” earlier, but that she was sleeping it off. He apologised for any inconvenience he may have caused. When the Officers asked to see the woman, the man took them to a bedroom on the Southern side of the home, where Espinosa was seen lying on a bed, covered from the neck down in a brown cover. The Officers asked the man to wake her. However, when he tried, she was unresponsive. When the Officers found no signs of life, the Paramedics were called and while waiting for their arrival, the man confessed to strangling Espinosa. Police were told the couple were arguing over a relationship the woman allegedly had with another man who they both knew. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. [Source]
