[Source: T&T Guardian] With the assistance of crews from all of its operating areas, T&TEC's Northern Distribution Area is progressing with restoration efforts in North-West Trinidad after lightning strikes and falling trees damaged overhead lines and poles yesterday (Tuesday 27th June 2023). This inclement weather was associated with the passage of an active Tropical Wave. Trinidad and Tobago remained under an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) until 12:00 PM today (Wednesday 28th June 2023).
In a Media Release today, T&TEC said that while initial reports showed approximately six (6) large area outages and several smaller community outages at mid-day yesterday, the number increased to seventy-eight (78) area outages as at 10:00 AM today. Seventeen (17) new area outage reports were received between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, bringing the total to ninety-five (95). Twelve (12) emergency and three (3) tree-trimming crews were deployed yesterday, and two (2) more emergency crews were added this morning. Following are the details of restoration activities as at 2:30 PM today:

More on this as it becomes available. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), continuing wind and moisture convergence from the Southeast will produce pre-dawn and early morning showers on Thursday (29th June 2023) in a few areas, with a medium to high (50% - 70%) chance for thunderstorm activity, favoring but not confined to, Northwestern, Western, and Southern areas of Trinidad. As the day progresses, conditions will become relatively fairer but with light to moderate showers over some areas. There remains a medium (40%) chance for an afternoon heavy shower or thunderstorm to develop. Winds would generally be from the East-Southeast to East.
On Friday (30th June 2023), ongoing low-level convergence and daytime heating are likely to interrupt some sunshine with partly cloudy to cloudy periods and light to moderate showers over varying areas. There is a medium (40% - 60%) chance for a heavy shower or thunderstorm in a few areas. As the late night progresses, with the approach of a trough, associated with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), instability increases. Daytime winds mostly from the Southeast to East will change to East-Northeast during the evening and night. On Saturday (1st July 2023), the front end of a trough, associated with the ITCZ, will bring instability from pre-dawn or early morning, with cloudy periods continuing into the afternoon. Light to moderate showers or rain can be expected with a moderate to high (60% - 80%) chance for heavy showers or thunderstorms. There will be settled conditions during the late afternoon, evening and night, with lingering showers in a few areas. The trough’s axis is estimated to pass during the evening. Winds generally from the Northeast during the day will change to the Southeast by late night. On Sunday (2nd July 2023), trailing convergence from the recently passed trough is likely to produce partly cloudy to cloudy periods during the early morning to early afternoon, with a medium (40% - 60%) chance for a heavy shower or thunderstorm in a few areas. Settled conditions are expected from late afternoon. Winds from the South-Southeast will change to Northeast by evening. On Monday (3rd July 2023), ahead of the axis of another approaching trough, associated with the ITCZ, instability will again begin to increase, bringing partly cloudy to cloudy periods with light to moderate showers or rain over most areas, and a medium to high (50% - 70%) chance for heavy showers or thunderstorms in some areas. The axis of this trough is estimated to pass late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Winds would be mainly from the Northeast to East-Northeast. In the event of heavy showers or thunderstorms, street or flash flooding is likely, and winds can become gusty in the vicinity. The Met Office notes that an increase in Saharan dust from mild concentrations to moderate is expected from Thursday (29th June 2023) and over the weekend. Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS. Pictured Above: The group of young men standing outside of their Graduation Ceremony. Minister of Education, Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly, has responded to an incident which occurred at the 2023 Graduation Ceremony of Trinity College, Moka, whereby a group of young men were prevented from crossing the stage at their graduation due to their hairstyles. Minister Gadsby Dolly labeled the situation that unfolded as “unfortunate and regrettable.”
In a statement posted on Facebook this morning (Wednesday 28th June 2023), the Minister said, “Having had the benefit of perusing reports from various perspectives on the matter, it is clear that regardless of where blame may or may not be apportioned, the graduating students of Trinity College, and in particular a group of young men, had a negative experience on a day which would have been anticipated and planned for as a highlight of their Secondary School experience. From the accounts received, the rules of the school relevant to the required dress code for the Graduation Ceremony were reiterated to both students and parents. Therefore, it seems clear that those who did not conform were, or should have been aware of their breach. However, the question of the suitability of the Graduation Ceremony as a forum to enforce the rules of a school, from which students were actively graduating, is a valid one.” She added, “Regardless of one's emotional and visceral response to this issue, it is a fact that societal order depends on rule-keeping, and that is a critical facet of the education schools are meant to impart. No matter how non-conformist one's outlook, we all follow some rule or the other — for example, driving on the authorized side of the road. Therefore, the practice of adherence to school rules is important, and where there are divergent views, dialogue, rather than open confrontation, should be encouraged; especially in a school setting.” Minister Gadsby Dolly concluded her statement by saying, “Yet another critical conversation arises out of these circumstances, which speaks to the standardization of the rules and removal of subjectivity which surrounds school hairstyles, especially for male students. The time for this conversation in Trinidad and Tobago has come, and decisions will be taken for implementation in the upcoming Academic Year, based on the Ministry of Education's discussions with our valued stakeholders.” According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), long settled periods today (Wednesday 28th June 2023) will be interrupted at times by scattered showers. There is a medium (40% - 60%) chance of a few heavy showers or thunderstorms. Further settling is expected by evening despite lingering showers.
The Met Office notes that gusty winds and street/flash flooding are likely in the vicinity of heavy downpours. An Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) remains in effect until 12:00 PM today. The forecast maximum temperature today will be 30°C at Piarco in Trinidad and 31°C at Crown Point in Tobago. Seas are moderate with waves 1.5m to 2m in open waters and below 1m in sheltered areas. The T&T Chamber noted that this collaboration is open to all members of the industry and encourages those that could not attend to join the group. The discussions focused on calories per meal in restaurants, sodium and fat content and strategies for healthy seeking behaviours in relation to food consumption. Additionally, the restaurants agreed that more consumer awareness initiatives were needed to support the health and wellness of the nation. After initial discussions, there was agreement by the restaurants to devise strategies to include healthier options on their menus and to reduce salt and sugar content. The Ministry’s Non-Communicable Diseases Unit will also provide technical guidance on best practices for healthier options in restaurants. The meeting with the heads of fast food chains and restaurants forms part of a national strategy by the Ministry to address NCDs. The strategy also included the creation of a position for a Director of Non-Communicable Diseases which was filled in April 2023 with the appointment of Dr. Maria Clapperton. In 2018, the Minister also met with heads of the Beverage Industry, who committed to and implemented 20% to 40% reduction in sugar sweetened beverages for children. The participating restaurants are expected to meet with the Minister in two (2) months to outline recommendations for healthier options on their menus. Minister Deyalsingh thanked the group and the Chamber CEO for their audience.
