Two (2) men are dead following a shooting on Thursday night (23rd February 2023) at a house in Santa Cruz. The deceased have been identified as 31-year-old Jason Hood and 34-year-old Anderson Phillip, both of Moraldo Trace, Upper Santa Cruz.
According to reports, Hood was at the home of his friend, Phillip, around 7:10 PM when both men were shot. Hood’s relatives told Police they heard multiple gunshots and upon investigating, found both men outside the front door with gunshot wounds. They were taken by Police to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope, for medical treatment. However, both men were declared dead around 8:00 PM. A Prison Officer is expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate today (Friday 24th February 2023), after he was arrested at the Port-of-Spain Prison on Carnival Tuesday, for possession of prohibited articles.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), No. 4686 Prison Officer I, Mohammed Khan, was charged with the offence, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Roger Gaspard SC, on Thursday (23rd February 2023). It is alleged the Prison Officer arrived at the Royal Gaol on Tuesday 21st February 2023 and reported for duty. While undergoing checks in the Scanner Room, the Senior Officer in charge was alerted by the Officer conducting a search, of a suspected breach. The Senior Officer escorted the suspect from the Scanner Room and asked him to declare any illegal or prohibited items in his possession. The Officer allegedly replied he had nothing illegal in his possession. A search was conducted in the presence of two (2) other Officers, which resulted in two (2) brown bags being found in the suspect’s pants pockets. Officers of the Port-of-Spain Division were contacted and checks of the brown bags revealed they contained 240 cigarettes. The Officer was arrested in connection with the find and charged yesterday (Thursday 23rd February 2023). Meanwhile, an intelligence-led anti-crime exercise was conducted in the Central Division yesterday, between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, which resulted in the arrest of a 32-year-old man for possession of 1 Kg of marijuana. Officers of the Cunupia Police Station and Criminal Investigations Department intercepted a Toyota Aqua motor vehicle with a male occupant at the corner of Munroe Road and Southern Main Road. A search of the vehicle resulted in the drug being found. Investigations are ongoing. A 23-year-old Venezuelan national was found murdered in his apartment at Pond Road, Aripero Village, South Oropouche, on Wednesday night (22nd February 2023). The deceased has been identified as Daniel Edwardo Manniguez Gonzales. He was a labourer.
According to reports, Police Officers were notified about several explosions heard at Gonzales' apartment at around 10:40 PM on Wednesday, where he was staying with his common-law wife, 20-year-old Daniela Barrerra and their 50-year-old neighbour, Samuel Richar. Upon arrival, Officers were directed to an upstairs apartment where they observed Gonzales lying unresponsive on the living room floor. Gonzales was found with gunshot wounds to the head and a chop wound to the neck. His right hand was tied with a blue cloth, both feet with a white cloth, and a blue cloth was tied around his neck. Investigators said two (2) armed Venezuelan nationals walked through an open front door and called out Gonzales by his name. They tied up his neighbour, Richar and put him into another room before beating Gonzales while repeatedly asking him, “Where is the gold?” The killers then tied up Gonzales and shot him in the head. After murdering Gonzales, the killers left with his clothing, baby clothes, a Samsung mobile phone, and a Nokia mobile phone. Police had to use Google Translate to interview his common-law wife, Barrerra. District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr. Ratiram viewed the body and ordered its removal to the Forensic Science Centre, St. James, for an autopsy to be performed. Crime Scene Investigators visited and processed the scene. They recovered three (3) nine-millimetre spent shells with the markings ‘TTPS,’ three (3) projectiles, six (6) 7.35-millimetre spent shells and a straight cutlass. [Source: T&T Guardian] Heritage Petroleum Company Limited said in a Media Release today (Thursday 23rd February 2023), that its Oil Spill Response Team continues its clean-up operation at the site of the Guayaguayare oil spill, which occurred on Saturday 11th February 2023.
Heritage said the sole source of the leak, located in a heavily forested area, was quickly identified and repaired on Sunday 12th February 2023. Subsequent checks of the line have revealed no further leaks. On Sunday 19th February 2023, Heritage was notified of complaints of an odour affecting a nearby community. Heritage Health, Safety and Environment representatives were immediately dispatched to conduct air quality tests, in the vicinity of the spill and surrounding environs. “No harmful emissions were detected, and Heritage continues to monitor the air quality of the area,” the company said. The Media Release concluded by saying, “Heritage and its contractors are working assiduously to remove the residual oil from the forested area. Members of the community have been hired by the contractor to help expedite the clean-up and restoration work. Moreover, the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) and the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) continue to be updated on an ongoing basis.” A 49-year-old man has appeared in Court, charged with the murders of Joseph Francis and Marlon Clarke, which occurred on 1st February 2023. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), Marvin Fletcher, of Enid Village, Rio Claro, was also charged with two (2) counts of possession of firearm, two (2) counts of possession of ammunition and shooting with intent to endanger life, when he appeared before Magistrate Ramdass, in the Rio Claro First Magistrates’ Court on Friday 17th February 2023.
The matter was adjourned to 3rd March 2023. Francis, 18, and Clarke, 29, both of Rio Claro, were passengers in a vehicle driven by a third man, on 1st February 2023, in the Cushe Village district, when they observed another man standing along the roadway. Francis allegedly exited the vehicle and got into an altercation with the man. During the incident, the man is alleged to have pulled out a firearm and shot the victim several times about the body. The gunman then approached the vehicle and fired several shots at the other two (2) men in the vehicle. Francis and Clarke died at the scene, while the third man escaped and was taken to Hospital for treatment. Investigations were supervised by Insp. Ramjag of Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region II and a male suspect was arrested in connection with the incident on 13th February 2023. Fletcher was charged by Sgt. Mohammed of HBI, Region II, Rio Claro Sub Office, on Thursday 16th February 2023, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Roger Gaspard SC, on that same date. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) announced earlier today that the Post-Cabinet Media Briefing will be held at 3:00 PM this afternoon (Thursday 23rd February 2023) at the Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) just announced that Prime Minister Keith Rowley tested positive for COVID-19 this morning (Thursday 23rd February 2023) after experiencing “mild flu-like symptoms last night.”
This is the fourth time he has tested positive for COVID-19. The OPM notes that Prime Minister Rowley will remain in isolation in keeping with the current COVID-19 protocols. “He will continue working from his office at the Prime Minister's residence. He is scheduled to lead the weekly Cabinet meeting this morning and is expected to attend Parliament virtually tomorrow where he will answer Prime Minister's Questions.” P.M. Rowley was scheduled to host a Press Conference at 2:30 PM this afternoon. However, a Post-Cabinet Media Briefing will be held instead at 3:00 PM today. Chief Executive Officer of TTT Limited (TTTL), Christophe Brathwaite, issued an apology on Wednesday (22nd February 2023) for erroneously reporting the death of 81-year-old Mas icon, Peter Minshall, during a live broadcast on Carnival Tuesday.
The disturbing news of Mr. Minshall’s “death” spread quickly both online and offline and was widely shared. However, close friends, family and even Minshall himself eventually refuted the false news of his demise. The Minshall Mas Facebook page posted, “Peter Minshall is alive and well. Please help dismiss fake news.” In a Media Release, TTTL said, “On Tuesday February 21, 2023 at the Queen's Park Savannah, during the live broadcast of the Parade of the Bands, a contractor engaged by TTT Limited (TTTL), erroneously reported that national icon, Peter Minshall had passed away. TTTL extends its sincerest apology to Mr. Minshall, his family, friends, and fans throughout Trinidad and Tobago and the wider diaspora.” TTTL said it first received the erroneous information from a trusted partner via its in-house announcement. The media company added, “An external contractor repeated the announcement at TTTL Carnival Broadcasts. While the contractor failed to exercise due diligence in the media industry we hold ourselves vicariously liable for the error in judgment. TTTL remains committed to delivering the highest quality standards in its journalistic and operating procedures and for making occasions like this failsafe.
