According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) this morning (Wednesday 31st January, 2024), there is a significant concentration of Saharan dust present in the atmosphere. Air quality is thereby reduced and sensitive groups should take the necessary precautions.
Concentrations of Saharan dust in the atmosphere this week are expected to fluctuate between moderate to high, at times. The highest concentrations are expected from today (Wednesday 31st January, 2024) to Saturday (3rd February, 2024). Persons sensitive to changes in air quality are advised to take the necessary precautions. Please be guided accordingly.
What is Saharan dust?
The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) is a warm, dry and dust-laden layer of air that originates over the Sahara Desert of North Africa, which extends from the earth's surface upwards several kilometres. When do we experience Saharan dust? Saharan dust is common in Trinidad and Tobago, occurring relatively often throughout the year. It is most frequent from April to October, usually peaking in May-June-July, which on average gets forty-four (44) dust haze days. Saharan dust and your health Saharan dust has been linked to increased emergency department visits for Asthma, Respiratory Infections and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Larger particles from Saharan dust can irritate the skin and eyes. Smaller particles from Saharan dust can be inhaled and cause respiratory disorders and cardiovascular events. How does it get here? Strong mid-level Easterly winds over the desert pick up sand and dust, and transport them high into the atmosphere. The dust is then transported across the Atlantic Ocean where a lot of it is deposited over the Caribbean Islands, including Trinidad and Tobago and parts of the South American continent.

Police found and seized a firearm and ammunition during anti-crime exercises in the Central Division on Monday (29th January, 2024).
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), while on patrol, Officers received information and proceeded to Petersfield, Waterloo Road, Carapichaima and conducted a search of an area in the vicinity of an electrical tower. A brown and black Canick pistol was found, loaded with three (3) rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The illegal items were secured and taken to the Police Station.
PC Thompson is continuing enquires. Police arrested a robbery suspect on Monday (29th January, 2024), during an anti-crime exercise in the Port-of-Spain Division.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), at approximately 6:50 PM, PC Oxely and PC Huggins, along with other Officers, were on patrol at Pioneer Drive, Sea Lots, when they observed an individual matching the description of a suspect wanted in connection with a robbery that occurred at City Gate on 22nd January, 2024. The Officers stopped and searched the 22-year-old from Pioneer Drive, and found a knife, seventy (70) grams of marijuana and a walkie-talkie in his possession. The items were seized, and he was arrested and taken to the Besson Street Police Station. PC Oxely is continuing investigations. This exercise was co-ordinated by ACP Maraj and Snr. Supt. Ramnarine, and spearheaded by ASP Soodeen, Insp. Sooklalsingh and Sgt. Alexander.
TTT Limited confirmed in a statement today (Tuesday 30th January, 2024) that Mr. Adrian Winter has been appointed as its Chief Executive Officer, following a rigorous selection process.
His appointment is effective from Monday 5th February, 2024. TTT Limited's Board Chairman Ronda Francis said, “We are thrilled to welcome Adrian to TTT Limited. His wealth of experience and strategic acumen make him the ideal leader to guide our organization into its next phase of growth and success.”
According to TTT Limited, “Mr. Winter has had extensive experience in communications, public policy, learning and development, and leadership and management, with a distinguished background, as Chairman of the Board of the National Commission for Self-Help and a member of the Faculty at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Training Academy.”
The statement added, “Ms. Francis is confident that Mr. Winter's leadership will play a pivotal role in driving the implementation of TTT's strategic direction and advancing its vision to become a leader in media and production in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider region.” Mr. Winter succeeds former CEO David Roberts. A Couva man appeared before a Master of the Court today (Tuesday 30th January, 2024), charged with murder, which stemmed out of an altercation that occurred on Christmas Day 2023.
Hardath Ram, a 48-year-old labourer was charged yesterday, following the advice of Deputy Director of Prosecutions (DPP), Mrs. Sabrina Dougdeen-Jaglal. He was not called upon to plea when he appeared before a Master of the Court and will next appear on 1st May, 2024. According to Police reports, Kameel Sooknanan, 57, of Felicity, Chaguanas, was allegedly involved in an altercation with the accused on 25th December, 2023, when he was allegedly assaulted with a piece of bamboo and rendered unconscious. He later succumbed to his injuries on 4th January, 2024. Ram was arrested on 24th January, 2024, following an investigation by PC Gaskin of the Couva Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The investigation was supervised by Supt. Dhillpaul, ASP Persad, Insp. Ousman, Insp. John and Sgt. Bridgemohan of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region III, with the assistance of PC Sirikissoon. The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is advising customers that planned maintenance work will affect several areas of San Juan and Arima on Wednesday (31st January, 2024). This may result in loss of electricity between the hours of works.
According to T&TEC, the affected areas in San Juan and Arima are as follows: SAN JUAN (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM)

T&TEC says it regrets the inconvenience which may be caused by these interruptions. The Ministry of Works and Transport is advising the public that there will be a temporary road closure along Sellier Street, Curepe, from Frederick Street to Marcano Street. This road closure is expected to commence on Wednesday (31st January, 2024) and will be completed on Sunday 4th February, 2024. This has become necessary to facilitate road rehabilitation works.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Prime Minister Keith Rowley met with Melissa Dalton, United States Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, at the Pentagon yesterday (Monday 29th January, 2024).
The OPM said discussions focussed on a number of areas, including defence co-operation, border security, partnership with the Delaware National Guard, cyber-defense and cyber-security as well as regional maritime interdiction. Other Officials from the Department of Defense were also present for the meeting, including Daniel Erikson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Western Hemisphere.
Also present were Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Senator the Hon. Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Hon. The body of a man was found in a bushy area in Freeport on Saturday (27th January, 2024). The deceased has not yet been identified. The man was said to be of mixed descent, slim built and brown in complexion. The body bore several stab wounds.
According to reports, Officers were called to a dirt road off Mahaica Road, Freeport, where the body was discovered. The man’s throat was slit and there were stab wounds about the body. A knife was also found at the scene. Officers said the man was wearing a navy blue T-shirt, long blue jeans, and black underpants with green and white sneakers. Investigations are continuing.
