The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) is a warm, dry and dust-laden layer of air that originates over the Sahara Desert of North Africa, which extends from the earth's surface upwards several kilometres. When do we experience Saharan dust? Saharan dust is common in Trinidad and Tobago, occurring relatively often throughout the year. It is most frequent from April to October, usually peaking in May-June-July, which on average gets forty-four (44) dust haze days. Saharan dust and your health Saharan dust has been linked to increased emergency department visits for Asthma, Respiratory Infections and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Larger particles from Saharan dust can irritate the skin and eyes. Smaller particles from Saharan dust can be inhaled and cause respiratory disorders and cardiovascular events. How does it get here? Strong mid-level Easterly winds over the desert pick up sand and dust, and transport them high into the atmosphere. The dust is then transported across the Atlantic Ocean where a lot of it is deposited over the Caribbean Islands, including Trinidad and Tobago and parts of the South American continent.
