UPDATE: Hannah’s father, Andrew, was said to be laughing when Police found him hiding at the apartment in El Dorado. His wife, Hannah’s mother, was reportedly held at a different location and is also in Police custody.
The suspect wanted for questioning in the murder of 18-year-old Hannah Mathura, whose bones were found buried in the backyard of her Valsayn home, was arrested in El Dorado last night (Wednesday 13th March, 2024). The skeletal remains, believed to be that of Hannah, who vanished in 2017, were found buried in a shallow grave near a tree behind the home. A male relative led Police to the grave-site, where an excavator was used to exhume the body.
The suspect, identified as Andrew Mathura, was held by Police with assistance from the Hunters Search and Rescue Team (HSRT), at an apartment building in El Dorado shortly after 9:00 PM on Wednesday night. He had been on the run before the gruesome discovery was made on Tuesday (12th March, 2024) at the home, located at Butu Road, Valsayn.
The suspect was found bareback and wearing short pants at the apartment building in El Dorado, where he was handcuffed and escorted to a Police jeep. Police said a woman found on the same compound as the apartment was also detained for questioning.
On Wednesday (13th March, 2024), Police had set up roadblocks and raided the Valsayn home. Heavily-armed Officers and Soldiers arrived in three (3) SUVs and raided the compound around 2:00 PM. They tried to kick down the doors to the V-shaped house, which is divided into two (2) separate living quarters, after receiving information that the suspect was hiding on the compound. However, after a thorough search, the Officers and Soldiers left empty-handed. Police initially said eight (8) children were found in the home on Tuesday, but relatives said on Wednesday that only three (3) were at home at the time. The children are said to live with their parents in one wing of the house while the children’s grandfather lives in the other wing with another relative. The red Kia Rio motor vehicle (PCK 8782), in which the suspect was seen leaving the house before Police arrived on Tuesday, was parked in the yard on Wednesday, with the trunk open. The car allegedly does not belong to the suspect and was driven back to the house on Wednesday morning by relatives. A video of the suspect leaving the area on Tuesday has gone viral on social media. In the video, the suspect could be heard cursing someone inside the yard of the house and demanding they open the front gate. A voice off-camera responded, saying, “Don’t talk to me. Go. Leave now.” The suspect reversed but then drove up to the gate again and mumbled a scripture verse before adding, “I is a God-fearing person,” and demanding again that the gate be opened. The person making the video asked him again to leave and the suspect reversed out of the street and drove off. We are a small operation.
