According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), around 12:00 PM on Wednesday (27th March, 2024), Officers at the Central Police Station received a report of a fracas at the Port-of-Spain Prison, Frederick Street. Further information was received that five (5) inmates and seventeen (17) Prison Officers were injured.
An investigation was immediately launched and a team of Officers from the Port-of-Spain CID, under the supervision of Supt. Bernard Etienne was detailed to investigate. The Officers visited the Accident and Emergency Department at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where the inmates were seeking medical attention, suffering from various injuries. They were all medically treated and later discharged. The Officers also visited the Accident and Emergency Department at the Mt. Hope Medical Sciences Complex, where seventeen (17) Prison Officers were being treated for various injuries. Persons were interviewed. They were all later discharged. Information was later received that around 12:20 PM on Friday (29th March 2024), inmate Shurland Brown, 26, who was also injured in the fracas and who was detained at the said institution, passed away while undergoing medical attention.
