The Ministry of Education has granted approval for all Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) Schools to be closed on the day of the Funeral for Satnarayan Maharaj, Tuesday 19th November 2019. This will allow Students, Principals, Teachers and Ancillary Staff of SDMS Schools to be able to attend the Funeral of the late Secretary General. Maharaj died shortly before Midnight on Friday 15th November 2019 following a Stroke the week before.
Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, has given the assurance that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) would be present to assist with traffic arrangement for the Funeral.
Even following his death, there is controversy surrounding Satnarayan Maharaj. An SDMS Executive issued a statement via its Media House, Radio and TV Jaagriti on Monday 18th November 2019 stating that no Media will be allowed at Maharaj’s Funeral. This decision was taken after a Reporter from an unnamed Media House apparently disrespected religious proceedings at the Wake on Sunday night. This Media ban has been met with wide condemnation, including from Pundit Satyanand Maharaj, who is the Spiritual Leader of the Satya Anand Ashram in Aranguez.
See an excerpt below from his statement posted to Facebook: The decision to ban the media from the funeral is indicative that there is no appreciation for the fact that Sat was a national personality and not merely a Hindu bossman. The media's interest in the funeral proceedings is not only reflective of this but also a testimony to the success of Sat's struggle to have Hindu Trinidad accepted as an integral and essential part of the fabric of Trinidad and Tobago. I shudder to think that the media ban was done to merely funnel a ready made audience to Radio/TV Jaagriti. We are a small operation.
