President General of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS), Satnarayan Maharaj, died shortly before Midnight on Friday 15th November 2019. Maharaj suffered a Stroke earlier this month and was listed in critical condition at Medical Associates. The SDMS confirmed his death in a statement, saying he passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was 88.
Maharaj is widely credited for succeeding in his efforts to have a public holiday created for “Indian Arrival Day” in T&T as well as reviving the celebration of Phagwa.
Maharaj faced backlash from the public and other religious leaders several times in his career for making highly controversial statements. Earlier this year while commenting on crime and falling Tourism in Tobago on his television programme, “Maha Sabha Strikes Back”, he said men there were mostly rapists. This led to an investigation by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) and a raid on his Broadcast Studio in Tunapuna for evidence to possibly charge Maharaj with Sedition. He fought back by accusing the TTPS of searching his Studio without a proper Warrant and he also filed a constitutional challenge to the old Sedition legislation.
In 2016 Maharaj spoke out against the Government’s amendment of the Child Marriage Act, which made it illegal in T&T for any child to be married under the age of 18. He claimed this was a constitutional violation of the rights of Hindus and opined that the new law opened the doorway for young girls to become wayward. The general public strongly denounced Maharaj for appearing to support Child Abuse and Statutory Rape. [Source] We are a small operation.
