Prime Minister Keith Rowley has responded to an article in today’s Newsday (Sunday 30th 2023), which stated: “The Prime Minister rejected complaints in the public domain about the cost of the Paria Commission of Enquiry (CoE) being too high.”
In a statement issued this afternoon via the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), P.M. Rowley said, “I simply said that commissions of enquiry are expensive undertakings. I used the Clico experience as an example. I further went on to say that it is because of this experience why the Government’s initial idea was to use a technical team to investigate and report on the accident. This was the first option. This would have been much cheaper and would have reported long ago.” The Prime Minister added, “I said that from the onset, the tragedy was politicized and as such, persons and interested parties started to invoke ‘cover-up’ and blame-throwing long before any examination of the facts and situations were known. These very same people are now taking issue with the Commission of Enquiry which they themselves demanded. I said nothing about ‘rejecting complaints about costs being too high.’” The statement from the Prime Minister concluded by saying, “These being the undisputed facts, the headline in today’s Newsday (Sunday July 30, 2023) and the statement that ‘The Prime Minister rejected complaints in the public domain about the cost of the Paria Commission of Enquiry (CoE) being too high,’ is wholly inaccurate and misleading and needs to be corrected.” On 25th February 2022, Yusef Henry, Fyzal Kurban, Kazim Ali Jr, Rishi Nagessar and Christopher Boodram were working on a 30-inch underwater crude oil pipeline in Pointe-a-Pierre when there was a sudden inrush of water. All five (5) men were sucked into the pipeline, with Boodram being the only rescued survivor. The men were in an LMCS hyperbaric chamber when the incident occurred. We are a small operation.
