A new Road Safety and Traffic Enforcement system will be launched on 2nd March 2020. The announcement was made by Minister of Works and Transport, Rohan Sinanan, during the launch at Hyatt Regency on Wednesday 22nd January 2020. The new system will see the introduction of a Demerit Points System, the New Fixed Penalty Traffic Ticketing System, and the Red Light Camera Enforcement System.
The systems are designed to help improve compliance on the nation's roads since the majority of vehicular accidents and road fatalities in T&T are the result of speeding. However, the Spot Speed Camera System, which detects when a driver breaks the speed limit, is not yet ready for launch. Legislation is currently before Parliament and should be finalised within a month, according to Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi, who also spoke at the launch.
