Preliminary analysis in the United Kingdom suggests a new strain of COVID-19 may be as much as 70% more transmissible than other circulating strains and may be contributing to a spike in cases in that country. The World Health Organization (WHO) is working to understand the extent to which the virus may spread more easily, along with other human behavioral factors that may be driving transmission. WHO is also looking at whether the mutation causes more severe illness and whether it can evade the antibodies generated by vaccination. The two (2) earliest known specimens of the new strain of COVID-19 were collected in late September 2020 in London and the nearby area of Kent, and cases continued to be found through early December. Scientists have hypothesized that the strain may have resulted from the transmission of the virus from a chronically infected patient. The Ministry of Health in Trinidad and Tobago issued a Media Release on Monday evening (21st December 2020), saying it has “noted with great concern, the recent developments announced by the Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization relating to a new strain of the COVID-19 virus in the U.K.” The Ministry said the following updated protocols will now apply to persons coming from the United Kingdom into Trinidad and Tobago (where the time between the date of departure and the date of arrival into Trinidad and Tobago is 14 days or less):
This new protocol deviates from the current quarantine period to be served by persons entering the country from other high-risk countries which presently remains - seven (7) days in State or State-supervised quarantine followed by seven (7) days home quarantine. According to the Ministry, all other protocols as it relates to entry into Trinidad and Tobago remain the same at this time. This is to ensure that continued protection is afforded to the members of the public. In its Media Release, the Ministry also took the opportunity to remind the population to continue following the public health measures. Further updates will be given to the population as the situation develops and new information comes to hand. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
