According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), at 5:00 PM this evening (Wednesday 6th September 2023), the centre of Hurricane Lee was located near 14.9N 46.4W or about 1,700 Km ESE of the Northern Leeward Islands.
Lee is moving West-Northwest near 22 Km/h and this motion is expected to continue for the next few days, with a slight reduction in forward speed. On this track, it is not expected to directly impact Trinidad and Tobago. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 120 Km/h with higher gusts. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami forecasts continued steady to rapid strengthening, and Lee is expected to become a major hurricane over the weekend. Interests in the Northern Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Lee. The NHC said in its 5:00 PM Advisory this evening, “Lee is forecast to become a major hurricane by early Saturday [9th September 2023] and could bring impacts to the Northern Leeward Islands this weekend. While it is too soon to determine the location and magnitude of these possible impacts, interests in this area should monitor the progress of Lee and further updates to the forecast. Swells generated by Lee are expected to reach portions of the Lesser Antilles on Friday, and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. The TTMS wishes to underscore that this system poses no immediate threat to Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and its Dependencies. There are currently no alerts, watches or warnings in effect for Trinidad and Tobago. The TTMS said it continues to monitor Lee and will issue an update at 12:00 PM tomorrow (Thursday 7th September 2023) or earlier as significant development progresses.
