The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service is advising that around 12:20 PM today (Friday 29th March, 2024), AT Sherlon Brown, aged twenty-six (26), who was charged for murder and housed at the Port-of-Spain Prison, passed away at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital whilst receiving medical attention.
Brown was one of the inmates injured in the disturbance at the Port-of-Spain Prison on Tuesday (26th March, 2024), and he was under the management and care of Dr. Allan Lalla at the Health Facility.
The Prison Service said his next of kin was contacted by an assigned Welfare Officer, who informed of his passing. Commissioner of Prisons (Ag.), Mr. Deopersad Ramoutar, in expressing condolences, has noted that the cause of death has not been determined, but it would be revealed by an autopsy. A separate investigation by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) would be initiated. Commissioner Ramoutar also stated that counseling services offered to Officers will be extended to inmates and family of the deceased, if required. The Prison Service said it “extends condolences to the family and friends of Sherlon Brown, as well as the inmate population, and hopes that they are granted comfort during this period of loss.” Commissioner Ramoutar apologized to inmates at Holy Thursday Mass at the Port-of-Spain Prison, for whatever wrong his Officers may have committed against them. Approximately eleven (11) persons were hospitalized following the altercation at the Port-of-Spain Prison (Royal Gaol) on Frederick Street. According to reports, an Officer was escorting a high-risk prisoner back to his cell around 11:00 AM, after he received medical attention. However, the prisoner allegedly refused to follow instructions and began engaging the Officer in a volatile manner. It was reported that several other inmates rushed to the prisoner’s aid, which led to a physical fracas.
Investigations are continuing.
