The Ministry of Health held a virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Wednesday 26th May 2021) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Principal Medical Officer of Institutions, Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards, provided an update on the facilities in the parallel healthcare system. Dr. Richards stated that as of 7:30am this morning, ninety-three (93) beds were added to the parallel healthcare system. She indicated that the Tacarigua step-down facility was operationalized as an institution for COVID-19 patients and added thirty-eight (38) beds to the system. Dr. Richards went on to say that forty (40) beds were added to the Debe facility and fifteen (15) to the Point Fortin facility which together, amounts to a total of 891 beds across the country. - Dr. Richards indicated that twelve (12) of the thirteen (13) facilities designated for the care of COVID-19 patients in Trinidad are currently in the ‘red zone,’ which means that they are above 75% capacity. She stated that total occupancy in the parallel healthcare system is now at 66% with ICU occupancy at 80%, Ward level occupancy at 67% and HDU occupancy at 48%. - Technical Director of Epidemiology, Dr. Avery Hinds, in providing his clinical update, stated that at the moment active COVID-19 case numbers aren’t increasing as quickly as initially predicted.
