Greece has declared a State of Emergency due to raging Forest Fires on either side of Athens. The fires have destroyed over one hundred (100) homes and forced several Towns to evacuate.
At least sixty (60) people are thought to have died and one hundred and fifty (150) others injured as Wildfires swept through a series of Holiday Resorts in Greece. See a Map of the affected areas below.
Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, has declared a three (3) day period of National Mourning in the wake of the fires after returning home early from a trip to Bosnia.
Prime Minister Tsipras made the following statement on Tuesday 24th July 2018 in a Televised Address: The country is going through an unspeakable tragedy. Today, Greece is mourning and we are declaring 3 days of National Mourning in the memory of those who perished.
The Greek Red Cross said on Tuesday morning it had found the bodies of twenty-six (26) people at a pair of Villas in the Village of Mati.
The Mayor of the fire-hit Town of Rafina, Evangelos Bournous, said on Tuesday that sixty (60) people had lost their lives so far during the blazes: The number of dead is rising. It has already exceeded 60.
Greece has called for international help through the European Union amid the growing disaster, as Authorities deployed the country's entire fleet of Water-Dropping Planes and Helicopters to give Tourists time to escape.
