Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday is back in the political arena after joining his daughter Mickela's Patriotic Front (PF) party as its new Campaign Manager. The party will contest all 41 seats in this year’s General Election. The announcements were made by the party’s political leader, Mickela Panday, at a Press Conference at the party's office in Chaguanas on Thursday (25th June 2020). Aside from being this country’s former Prime Minister, Basdeo Panday was also an Opposition Leader, Trade Union Leader and a Lawyer. Speaking about her father at the Press Conference, Mickela said: His role at this moment is, he is the campaign manager. Mickela also said her father is "not dictating the pace" in the PF, noting "The wonderful thing about it is, he allows us the option and opportunity to choose at the end of the day." She added that Basdeo Panday has a team of people from his 1995-2001 Government who are also helping.
It’s been a long journey for the PF party to get to this point, as Mickela pointed out that it took almost a year to open the party’s bank account and they don’t currently have any financiers. The party intends to be fully transparent regarding its finances in the future. Apart from Basdeo Panday’s presence at the Press Conference on Thursday, also in attendance was former T&T National Footballer Kenwyne Jones. Mickela said, "He is part of our team." She added that Jones' role would be announced later. There has already been talk that the PF party will be essentially splitting the vote at the upcoming General Election. However, Mickela believes a vote for the PF is neither a wasted vote nor one that will will split another party's votes. She said at the Press Conference that statistics from the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) and the Central Statistical Office (CSO) show that less than half of the electorate votes for the PNM and the UNC. The party will therefore target the electorate that neither wants a PNM nor a UNC Government. While the PF has spoken with other political parties, its leader said, "We will not be joining with anybody for joining sake." She said the time for this was past and political coalitions had failed. She said that if people are voting for one party because it is less corrupt than another, they are still "voting for corruption." The PF party will soon disclose its plans to deal with several national issues. [Source] We are a small operation.
