The suspect reportedly told Police that he was dissatisfied with the ex-leader and wanted to kill him, but not over his political beliefs. He is currently facing an attempted murder charge, however, local Police are expected to upgrade the charge to murder, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK. “Former Prime Minister Abe was giving a speech normally, but a man came from behind. The first shot heard only a very loud sound and the person did not fall down. However, the moment the second shot was shot, former Prime Minister Abe collapsed,” a witness told NHK. “The [suspect] didn't seem to run away, he stayed there and the gun was there.” The killing has sent shockwaves around the world and throughout Japan, a country with notoriously strict gun ownership laws. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died on Friday (8th July 2022) after being shot while giving a campaign speech in broad daylight in Nara, Japan. The assassination of Abe in Japan, which is a nation not used to gun violence, has prompted an outpouring of support and condolences from the international community.
An Official from the Nara City Fire Department told CNN earlier on Friday that Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, a term used to describe the sudden loss of heart function and breathing. A suspect, identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, a local man in his 40s, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, according to media outlet NHK. It appears the suspect used a handmade gun in the attack, though the motive remains unclear. On Friday he was held for questioning at Nara Nishi Police Station, NHK reported. According to Doctors at the Nara Medical University Hospital during a Press Conference on Friday, Abe died from excessive bleeding and was pronounced dead at 5:03pm local time. The Doctors said the bullet that killed the former Japanese leader was “deep enough to reach his heart” and medical staff were unable to stop the bleeding. Abe, 67, was the former Liberal Democratic Party leader and Japan's longest-serving Prime Minister, serving from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020, before resigning due to health reasons. Since stepping down, he remained in the public eye and regularly appeared in the media to discuss current affairs. Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said in a Press Conference on Friday that, “This is not a forgivable act,” adding that he would “take appropriate measures.” This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
