The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) said it intercepted an unregistered vessel this morning (Wednesday 31st January, 2024), carrying a number of undocumented foreign nationals that had crossed the Trinidad/Venezuela International Maritime Border. The incident occurred at approximately 9:43 AM when the vessel was first observed Southeast of Islote Point on the South coast of Trinidad.
According to the TTCG, a pursuit ensued, and the vessel made an attempt to avoid interception through the use of evasive maneuvers. The TTCG said it pursued the contact of interest and was eventually able to detain the vessel. Onboard were twenty-seven (27) undocumented foreign nationals, comprising: sixteen (16) adult males, eight (8) adult females, and three (3) male minors. The persons and the vessel were taken in tow and escorted to the TTCG's Headquarters in Staubles Bay, Chaguaramas. The Immigration Division and Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) were informed. Investigations are ongoing. The TTCG said it “continues to provide border security and search and rescue services to maintain the safety and security of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago through the conduct of maritime security patrols within our area of operations.” We are a small operation.
