Tobago has recorded its first confirmed case of the Gamma variant, (also known as the Brazilian or P1 variant). The Gamma variant is more contagious than the previous strains of COVID-19, which means it spreads more easily. Tobago continues to experience a surge in cases, with thirty-eight (38) reported in the last 24 hours along with two (2) more deaths. Active cases on the island has reached 357. A Media Release on Tuesday evening (27th July 2021) from the Communications Unit - Division of Health, Wellness And Family Development, Tobago House of Assembly (THA), states that the Division and TRHA are ramping-up testing for Variants of Concern (VOC) and will continue to provide updates if any variants are detected in Tobago. Additionally, the Media Release states that systems are being prepared to deal with the Delta variant, which is now the dominant strain globally. The Delta variant is responsible for all major spread and most unvaccinated deaths in the United Kingdom, United States and other countries. We now have 4.16 Million COVID-19 deaths globally and more than 194 Million cases. “This means, that we must be more vigilant now. We are required to wear our masks, stay at least 6-feet apart from others, wash our hands regularly with soap and water, and get vaccinated. Personal responsibility and vaccination is paramount.” Acting County Medical Officer, Dr. Tiffany Hoyte, said: "the Gamma variant circulating in our community is contributing to the rise in cases. The presence of this variant means that the fight to save lives and to reduce the spread of the virus will become more difficult. Since it is more contagious than the original virus, we expect more cases, and with more cases comes more deaths. Our aim is to save lives and prevent persons from being hospitalized. The key to achieving this is to get most of our population vaccinated. Getting vaccinated reduces your personal risk of infection and protects against getting severe illnesses and death. Having most of our population vaccinated will decrease the rate at which the virus spreads. When combined with masks, social distancing and hand washing, it is the best protection we have and it works." The Media Release concluded by saying, “Our home isolation and monitoring programme is working. However, there remains a certain level of personal responsibility with COVID-19 positive persons and their households, as well as the general public. When we do the right thing and get vaccinated, we can help bring the numbers down and reduce the possibilities of further mutations.” This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
