Prime Minister Keith Rowley is set to address the nation at 2pm (or slightly later) today (Wednesday 23rd December 2020) from the Diplomatic Centre in Port-of-Spain. Will the Prime Minister lift any of the current restrictions in T&T, even as concerns grow over the likely spread of the new strain of COVID-19 from the United Kingdom?
We previously highlighted a few of the measures that may be announced today, but nothing is confirmed, of course, until the Prime Minister speaks. Watch the live stream of the Press Conference below when it begins at 2pm, courtesy of CCN TV6.

Store owners in Chaguanas are reporting the worst they have ever experienced for Christmas sales - mere days before the 25th. Many stores are said to be practically begging customers to buy something instead of just browsing. Even though the Chaguanas Main Road can be seen buzzing with people and there is a lot of vehicular traffic, it seems many people were not buying, but rather browsing around. Many owners said it was the first time they had to beg customers to buy items. Kazim Ali, a worker for over ten (10) years at Amaaz Variety Store told Newsday, “I am still in shock. We expected sales to be slow but definitely not this slow. During this time, most of the items would be sold out. Now there are few people coming into the stores. They are only buying items they need.“ Nirmala Boodram, Manager at nearby Jankie’s Jewelry, was hoping for a last-minute miracle, noting on Tuesday (22nd December 2020) that sales were nothing compared to last year and previous years. “People are coming in one by one and some with families. A lot of people are asking for discounts as well. I mean it may sound like a miracle at this point, but many customers like the last-minute rush. So we are hoping by tomorrow sales may pick up.” Linda Anmolsingh, Supervisor at Shoppers Freezone, also noted that sales were slow, adding, “Due to the state of the economy and the Pandemic, we know that a lot of people lost their jobs so not many people are buying.” Hopefully the power of “last-minute Trini shopping” kicks in soon to help these businesses for Christmas, before it is too late. According to Police, a man was liming with friends near a shop at Hilltop Drive, Maturita Extension in Arima around 8:30pm last night (Tuesday 22nd December 2020) when two (2) armed men approached and shot him several times before escaping on foot. The man was taken to the Arima Hospital by passersby, where he was treated for the gunshot wounds and is listed in stable condition. He was later transferred to another Hospital. Photo Credit: @MariefHull/Twitter Sixteen (16) months after a ‘Sauce’ doubles vendor was gunned down and killed while selling to customers at the busy Curepe Junction, a second vendor was also killed in similar circumstances last night (Tuesday 22nd December 2020). According to reports, 31-year-old Kareem Jervis (aka ‘Smokey’) was at the Sauce doubles stand along the Southern Main Road in Curepe around 7:30pm on Tuesday night when he was approached by gunmen and shot multiple times about the body. He was rushed to the nearby Mt. Hope Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival at 7:40pm. Investigators said Jervis was shot in the left side of his chest, forearm and the right side of his back. Officers from the St. Joseph Police Station reponded to the crime scene and blocked off a portion of the Southern Main Road, causing some build up of traffic along the busy intersection. Investigations into the incident are ongoing. In eerily similar circumstances, Sauce doubles vendor Shazard Manick (aka ‘Shazo’), was also shot multiple times by gunmen on 10th August 2019, while he served customers along the Southern Main Road in Curepe. He also died at the Mt. Hope Hospital. His last moments were recorded and shared on social media by several persons before Police arrived on the scene. It’s interesting to note that Manick was the mentor for Jervis - having introduced him to the doubles business. Jervis even paid tribute to Manick following his murder. Robbery is not considered a motive in either murders as there were no attempts to steal anything by the gunmen, before or after the killings. They simply fled the scene afterwards. The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily 4pm update this afternoon (Tuesday 22nd December 2020) that there are twelve (12) additional COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry also reported twelve (12) cases yesterday as well as two (2) unfortunate deaths.
The country’s death toll currently stands at 125. T&T’s confirmed cases now rises to 7,024, with 411 being active cases. A total of 6,488 patients have recovered from the virus to date. The Ministry states that of the twelve (12) new positive cases, three (3) are recently repatriated persons and two (2) are from Tobago. Further, the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during the period 19th - 21st December 2020 and not the last 24 hours. The Ministry also notes that there are currently twenty-four (24) COVID-19 positive patients being treated at Hospitals and thirty-nine (39) patients are in step-down/transition facilities. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. Preliminary analysis in the United Kingdom suggests a new strain of COVID-19 may be as much as 70% more transmissible than other circulating strains and may be contributing to a spike in cases in that country. The World Health Organization (WHO) is working to understand the extent to which the virus may spread more easily, along with other human behavioral factors that may be driving transmission. WHO is also looking at whether the mutation causes more severe illness and whether it can evade the antibodies generated by vaccination. The two (2) earliest known specimens of the new strain of COVID-19 were collected in late September 2020 in London and the nearby area of Kent, and cases continued to be found through early December. Scientists have hypothesized that the strain may have resulted from the transmission of the virus from a chronically infected patient. The Ministry of Health in Trinidad and Tobago issued a Media Release on Monday evening (21st December 2020), saying it has “noted with great concern, the recent developments announced by the Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization relating to a new strain of the COVID-19 virus in the U.K.” The Ministry said the following updated protocols will now apply to persons coming from the United Kingdom into Trinidad and Tobago (where the time between the date of departure and the date of arrival into Trinidad and Tobago is 14 days or less):
This new protocol deviates from the current quarantine period to be served by persons entering the country from other high-risk countries which presently remains - seven (7) days in State or State-supervised quarantine followed by seven (7) days home quarantine. According to the Ministry, all other protocols as it relates to entry into Trinidad and Tobago remain the same at this time. This is to ensure that continued protection is afforded to the members of the public. In its Media Release, the Ministry also took the opportunity to remind the population to continue following the public health measures. Further updates will be given to the population as the situation develops and new information comes to hand. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
