Several areas in Trinidad were without electricity last night (Sunday 26th November 2023) for approximately thirty (30) minutes, due to an “incident” at one of the country's Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Parts of South, Central, West and East Trinidad were reportedly without electricity between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM. Some of the affected areas included: Penal, Siparia, Cunupia, Longdenville, San Juan, Maraval, Carenage, Tunapuna and Bon Air/Arouca. According to the Corporate Communications Department at the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC), the problem originated with one of its IPPs. However, the Commission did not specify which IPP was responsible for the outages, nor did they say if the brief blackout was connected to recent upgrades at the Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) Plant, which is one of its IPPs. The Commission said the situation was quickly managed and all customers were back on supply within half an hour. T&TEC said only a “small percentage” of customers were affected but could not give an exact figure. More on this as it becomes available. [Source: Loop]

Pennywise Cosmetics Limited has announced the grand relocation of its Arima store, which was the first Pennywise outlet opened forty (40) years ago.
In a Media Release on Friday (24th November 2023), Pennywise said this new 13,500 square-foot store, which is located at Pro Queen Street, Arima (Opposite the Market), will open today (Monday 27th November 2023) “with a small ceremony starting at 7:30 AM.” Speaking with Newsday, Pennywise CEO Dalvi Paladee said the move was a result of the company’s customer-oriented approach. “The [Arima] store has a lot of history, because it remained the smallest store after forty (40) years. Opening this brand-new store, which is one of our biggest stores, will help to alleviate the drama the customers were going through every day. Customers had to actually jostle. We were always keeping our eye out for the right property to ensure that the customers would be able to get the best service, and this store offers that.” Paladee said the store was renovated in just two (2) months and stocked and prepared in just two (2) days, as permission was only granted last Friday for it to open. He attributed Pennywise’s success and longevity to his customer-based approach. “Hard work, dedication, thinking about people, making sure they are happy when they're shopping and they get the best prices. Our tagline was ‘Widest range, lowest prices,’ and it still is. Our interest in this store is to make sure people are happy. My job, the Management's job and the Directors’ job is to make sure that we continue to serve the customer and give them the best class of service.” Paladee revealed some exciting plans are in the works for Pennywise, including expansion and a change in management. “We intend to come out with a new mall again. We'll be building a mall in the East over the next two (2) or three (3) years that is already working in the making. It will take some time, but that's the next plan. My three (3) sons…these young guys are coming to take over the show. They are well trained, and all of them are involved in the business. Very soon, I'll be taking a secondary space in the Pennywise lineup to allow them to take the mantle and, of course, carry the company forward.” [Source: Newsday] Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) said it is pleased to advise the public that the “continued collaboration with our customer, Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC), has led to the successful completion of the planned maintenance exercise and Distributed Control System (DCS) upgrade at 5:27 AM today (Sunday 26th November 2023).”
In a Media Release, TGU said the upgraded DCS system will enhance and maintain the efficient delivery of power from TGU to T&TEC. It will also allow TGU to maximize the utilization of its critical 'fuel-free' steam cycle, contributing 37.5% (270MW) of output without the need for natural gas as fuel. TGU said it has placed on the grid, all six (6) gas turbine generators and is working at “attaining full capacity with the steam turbines in complete operation.” TGU added, “We remain committed to ensuring that our operations support the country's energy needs. TGU commends the team of employees that executed the maintenance and upgrade works, as well as all other employees who supported the Plant operations in the execution of these works. We also thank the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries and the TGU Board of Directors for its support during this exercise.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “We appreciate the ongoing support of our customer, IPP partners, and the national community, reaffirming our commitment to contributing to a reliable power supply for the nation. TGU will continue to provide updates as necessary to keep the public informed.” A High Court acquitted six (6) Police Officers on Friday (24th November 2023) of killing three (3) friends back in 2011. Family members of the deceased attended the hearings and found the State had a good case against the six (6) Officers — Sgt. Khemraj Sahadeo and Constables Renaldo Reviero, Glenn Singh, Roger Nicholas, Safraz Juman, and Antonio Ramadin. However, their confidence shattered within minutes when a 12-member jury found each Officer not guilty on Friday.
Following the verdicts on Friday, Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood-Christopher, said in a Media Release, “The actions of these Officers came under scrutiny and they were subjected to the due process of law. The circumstances of this case present the typical occupational hazard for Police Officers. As an administration, we work to mitigate against such occurrences by developing and implementing a Use of Force policy to guide Police Officers in their operations.” She added, “The full deployment of body-worn cameras will also be effective in regulating the conduct of Officers and in providing evidence that assist in determining the adequacy and appropriateness of Police actions. Incidents like these are regrettable, and I wish to emphasize the need for Officers to become more proficient in our Standard Operating Procedures.” The Media Release concluded by saying, “Notwithstanding the outcome of this case for the Officers, lives have been lost. In that regard, I wish to again extend our condolences and regrets to the families of the victims in this incident.” Police fatally shot 29-year-old Kerron ‘Fingers’ Eccles, 20-year-old Abigail Johnson, and 27-year-old Alana Duncan, when they intercepted their car in Barrackpore around 9:00 PM on 22nd July 2011. The Officers attached to the San Fernando Robbery Squad alleged that occupants of the vehicle opened fire, and they shot back, killing the three (3) friends. One of the Officers involved, WPC Nicole Clement, testified that two (2) of the friends survived the shooting. Clement, who turned State-witness, said the victims were taken to another location and executed. However, Clement refused to testify during the trial. More on this as it becomes available.

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) has been advised by Independent Power Producer (IPP) Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) that the scheduled upgrade work at its Union Estate Plant, which necessitated a total plant shutdown by TGU, has been successfully completed and the Plant is now fully back online. As such, the other IPPs, PowerGen and CotourGlobal Trinity, have been instructed to return to normal operations.

Mother of two (2), Anissa Rajgobin-Ageemoolar, is continuing her recuperation at the San Fernando General Hospital, after being shot three (3) times on Monday (20th November 2023) by her ex-husband, Sharaz Ageemoolar, while at an insurance company at Cross Crossing Shopping Centre II, San Fernando.
She is now listed in stable condition. An autopsy was expected to be performed on her ex-husband, Sharaz, who shot her in broad daylight before killing Rosario Ramdhan, an innocent bystander, outside General Accident Insurance. Sharaz took his own life on Monday night. Speaking to Guardian Media on Thursday (23rd November 2023), a relative of Sharaz, who did not wish to be named, said Anissa was just 23-years-old when she married Sharaz. The couple courted for four (4) years before marrying on 1st June 1999. They had two (2) sons, now aged twenty (20) and twenty-six (26). The relative said Sharaz was a welder and fabricator and had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Together, the couple opened a grocery and worked hard to raise their boys. The relative suspected that jealousy drove Sharaz to commit the attempted murder of his ex-wife. Their divorce, which Sharaz initiated, was said to be in its final stages. Saying the ordeal was hard to bear, the relative said no one expected Sharaz to commit the horrific attack. In an interview on Tuesday (21st November 2023), Anissa’s father, Basdeo Rajgobin, revealed that Sharaz was a violent man who abused Anissa for years. However, she never took out a protection or restraining order against him. Rajgobin said Anissa tried to hide her abuse as she did not want him to worry. However, when things got out of hand, Anissa sought refuge at her father’s home in Aripero Village, where she had been living since July. Rajgobin added that a month after she moved in, his home was firebombed in August while he was abroad, and was also shot at earlier this month. More on this as it becomes available.
