The 9-year-old boy who was grazed by a bullet near his right eye following an attempted robbery at Pennywise Plaza in La Romaine on Monday evening (19th September 2022), is set to remain at Hospital for an additional week.
The boy, who suffered the injury during a confrontation with Police and armed bandits, is a Standard 3 student of the Siparia RC Primary School. He had a surgical procedure done on Friday (23rd September 2022). His father, who did not want his son identified, said, “There were no complications with the surgery. He is drowsy at the moment because of medication. The doctors said the eye has to remain covered for at least a week. They said he has to remain for another week for observations.” The boy has been in stable condition at the San Fernando General Hospital since Monday evening. On his way home with his family on the Southern Main Road, he was in the back seat of a moving car while Police were chasing gunmen in a Nissan X-Trail. During an exchange of gunfire, the boy was hit. No one else in the car was injured. His father said the family had earlier left a bookstore in San Fernando and were on their way home. The injured boy was taken to the La Romaine Police Post, and then to Hospital. Security Officers, Jerry ’Bat’ Stuart, Jeffrey Peters and Peola Baptiste, all of Allied Security Limited, were transporting cash out of the Pennywise Plaza compound on Monday when they were ambushed by armed bandits. Stuart and Peters died while Baptiste was still hospitalized in critical condition up to Friday (23rd September 2022). Allister Harris, 47, of Cocoyea, who works with Phoenix Protective Services at the Plaza, was also hit. He suffered minor injuries and was treated and discharged on Monday. A shootout with Police at a house off Pond Street in La Romaine eventually left four (4) of the bandits dead: Greg Dodough, Deaundre Montrose and brothers Kyle and Keyon Ramdhan, all of Fyzabad. Five (5) suspects, including a soldier, were also held by Police in connection to the deadly heist on Monday. Investigations are ongoing. [Source: Newsday]

In its third recent call to its members, the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) is asking all teachers to stay home for the entire day on Monday (26th September 2022), as salary negotiations have stalled. Monday also happens to be ‘Budget Day’ in Trinidad and Tobago.
TTUTA's First Vice President, Marlon Seales, said in an internal memo today (Friday 23rd September 2022) that he is asking members to ”once again to take time to reflect.” He added, “On Monday September 26, 2022 (Budget Day), reflect on what a 2022 budget could mean on your 2014 salary.” TTUTA was recently offered a 4% increase in salaries, along with other Trade Unions, but rejected the offer. Since then, it has been calling on Chief Personnel Officer (CPO) Dr. Daryl Dindial to meet with it to negotiate further, but this has not yet occurred. For its first protest, teachers stayed home to ”rest and reflect” on the first day of the 2022/2023 school year, 5th September 2022. Its second protest was held this past Thursday (22nd September 2022), with teachers only reporting to school for the second half of the day. Speaking with Newsday, Seales said that 75% of TTUTA's members heeded that call to stay home. He warned that if the CPO continued to ignore the Association, further protests and ”disruptions to the education system” will happen. After thanking teachers for their support on Thursday, Seales added: ”It pains me to report, however, that up to the recording of this expression of gratitude, the Office of the Chief Personnel Officer has not contacted the Association to indicate when the dialogue between the negotiating teams would continue.” Seales added, “As education professionals, we know that concepts are sometimes not grasped immediately, and our general council when planning for today's event [Thursday] also planned for this eventuality. TTUTA stands ready, willing and able to continue negotiating in the boardroom or on the streets.” [Source: Newsday] Almost immediately upon passing Trinidad and Tobago, the most recent Tropical Wave to affect us was upgraded to Tropical Depression #9. For this weekend (24th and 25th September 2022), the Met Office says we can expect sunny conditions to be interrupted at times with partly cloudy periods, producing showers in varying areas and the chance of an isolated heavy shower or thunderstorm in a few areas, mainly during the afternoon. In the event of a heavy shower or thunderstorm always be on the look-out for street or flash flooding and gusty winds in the vicinity. Generally, there is not much discernable Saharan dust in the atmosphere at this time and this should continue throughout the weekend. A 42-year-old man was granted bail in the sum of $80,000 with surety by a Port-of-Spain Magistrate, charged with sexual penetration of a minor. The self-employed labourer of Barataria was charged with the offence when he appeared before Magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor, on Monday 19th September 2022.
He was granted bail and ordered to have no direct or indirect contact with the victim. The matter was adjourned to 17th October 2022. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the victim reported to her mother that a man sexually assaulted her on 19th December 2018. The Children's Authority of Trinidad and Tobago said it condemns the incidents of gun violence which have left several children nursing severe gunshot injuries in recent months.
In a Media Release on Thursday (22nd September 2022), the Authority notes that the increase in gun violence within communities is a “threat to the lives and safety of our country's children. Recent reports indicate that while children were either enjoying playtime, paying respect to the dead or spending quality time with relatives, those periods of innocence, fun and everyday routines have been marred by gun violence, leaving children and their families traumatized.” The Authority added, “These acts of violence also underscore the need for society to restore the ’village’ within our communities. Therefore, the Authority is appealing to the public to contact the relevant agencies, including the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, if they are concerned about their safety.” The gun violence pervading communities can leave parents, guardians and the country by extension, “wondering how to keep children and families safe. While the Authority has been engaging the public through various mediums on how to prevent child abuse, greater dialogue and collaboration is now a necessity within communities and among agencies to determine how to stem this tide of violence and make our communities safe spaces for our children.” The Authority's Emergency Response Team continues its outreach to affected families to provide support and the required psychosocial intervention and support. The Authority said it will continue to collaborate with its key stakeholders within the child protection sector to “ensure the most favourable outcomes for our nation's children.” The public is reminded to contact the following agencies for support:
