According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), the axis of the next Tropical Wave is expected to reach Trinidad and Tobago sometime on Monday (29th August 2022).
Meanwhile, the large area of disturbance in the far Eastern Atlantic is producing numerous showers and thunderstorms but remains disorganized presently. This disturbance still has a 10% chance of cyclonic development over the next forty-eight (48) hours and a 30% chance over the next five (5) days. At this time, it poses no direct threat to Trinidad and Tobago. Surface wind convergence across Trinidad and Tobago in a very moist atmosphere has produced periods of rain and showers today (Friday 26th August 2022). A bit of sunshine would provide enough heating to enhance the probability of thunderstorm activity. In the event of heavy showers or thunderstorms, street and/or flash flooding with gusty winds is likely to occur. A very moist, and in some areas, waterlogged ground, has enhanced the probability of landslides and landslips in areas so prone. The forecast maximum temperature today will be 31°C at Piarco in Trinidad and 28°C at Crown Point in Tobago. Over the weekend, the Met Office says some sunshine with surface convergence, and at times light and variable winds, are likely to produce mixed conditions and thunderstorm activity mainly during the afternoon periods.

A 40-year-old man from Penal was killed yesterday evening (Thursday 25th August 2022) while attempting to drive through dangerous flood waters in his van. The powerful force of the current eventually pushed the van off the road and into a river.
The man, identified as Annan Boysie, 40, of La Costena Development, Penal, was driving his van East along the M1 Ring Road, Princes Town, when he attempted to pass through flood waters as he approached the Cedar Hill Estate Road in St. Madeline. It appears Boysie did not anticipate the force of the current, which pushed his vehicle into a nearby river on the Southern side of the roadway.
Several passersby tried to assist Boysie but were unsuccessful. However, they called for help and members of the Fire Service eventually managed to pull the van from the river. Boysie’s body was found in the backseat of his van due to the force of the current in the flood waters.
District Medical Officer Dr. Rajkumar was called to the scene and the man’s body was ordered removed to the San Fernando mortuary.
Motorists are again strongly advised to not drive through floodwaters and should note the following:

Tragedy struck a family in San Fernando this morning (Thursday 25th August 2022) when an 11-year-old girl was mauled to death by a dog at a relative's home. According to reports, Rachel Bhagwandeen, of Fairview, Freeport, and her brother, Jaylon, 9, were watching television inside their uncle's house along Solomon Street, Vistabella, around 11:00 AM, when one of their relative's dog ran inside and attacked them. The 11-year-old girl heroically told her brother to run while the American Bulldog started to maul her in a bedroom, instead of Jaylon. The boy, unhurt, ran and frantically alerted relatives. However, when they came to the girl’s assistance, they could not get the savage dog off the child until the owner arrived between ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes later. Family members were unsure how the dog left the area in which he was kept, and ended up inside the relative’s house. 11-year-old Rachel died at the scene. There were wounds to the side of her neck and face. Recalling the incident to reporters, Rachel’s mother, Seema, 41, said, “I hit the dog, I kick the dog, I try to get the dog to bite me instead.” She said the dog began shaking her daughter, who stretched out her hand and called out to her. “She was saying mummy, mummy, mummy...I couldn’t do nothing,” a tearful Seema said.
She confirmed her daughter saved her little brother, sacrificing her life for him. Seema described Rachel as intelligent and as one who liked to dress up. She attended Vistabella Presbyterian School and was excited to write the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) exam next year. Seema’s brother, Mastry Sooklalsingh, 62, also attempted to rescue the child, but the dog tried to attack him. He described the dog as vicious. “That dog just aggressive. I ’fraid the dog,” he told reporters. He added that the dog was brought to the house as a pup about two (2) years ago, and it was playful. However, the dog’s temperament changed. “Since they come and barred off the dog in the back, the dog get vicious,” Sooklalsingh said. The dog will be put to sleep following the deadly incident, according to reports. Wikipedia states that the American Bulldog is a large, muscular breed of working dog that were used as stock dogs, catch dogs, and guardians on farms and ranches. They are descended from the Old English Bulldog, which is thought to have arrived in America as early as the 17th century, brought over by working-class immigrants from England. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), an area of disturbance that has recently moved off the Western coast of Africa has a 10% chance for cyclonic development over the next forty-eight (48) hours and a 20% chance over the next five (5) days. At this time, the Met Office says it poses no direct threat to Trinidad and Tobago.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, which is also monitoring this disturbance, said today (Thursday 25th August 2022) that it is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The NHC notes that environmental conditions could support some slow development of this system through early next week while it moves quickly Westward across the Eastern and Central Tropical Atlantic at 15 to 20 Mph.
As for today’s weather across T&T, the Met Office says the axis of the Tropical Wave which arrived early this morning, is now just past Trinidad and Tobago. Most of the associated disturbance weather has drifted North of T&T and is affecting the central Lesser Antilles at this time.
Moisture from the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), together with this morning’s heating and local dynamics will result in light to moderate showers today in varying areas and a 60% chance of thunderstorm activity favouring, but not confined to, Western coastal areas of Trinidad. The forecast maximum temperature today will be 32°C at Piarco in Trinidad and 31°C at Crown Point in Tobago. The Met Office says that the next analyzed Tropical Wave is over the central North Atlantic and is estimated to reach the Lesser Antilles early next week. The South-West Regional Health Authority is advising the public that the newborn infant found abandoned on the compound of the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) on Monday (22nd August 2022), is clinically stable and continues to be cared for by dedicated professionals while investigations continue.
In its second update since the incident, the SWRHA said it notes with appreciation “the outpouring of concern regarding the wellbeing of the newborn infant.” According to reports, a man told a female security guard on Monday morning that he heard sounds coming from a garbage bag in one of the hallways at the SFGH. The Officer followed him to the spot and as she approached, the child's cries were heard. The guard opened the bag and observed a baby along with a written note. The man was said to be at the Hospital that morning to attend an interview. It is suspected that the mother of the newborn infant may be a Venezuelan national. The written note she left with her baby allegedly stated she was unable to care for the child. The SWRHA said it continues to invite patients to utilize the Customer Service Centre at 87-SWRHA (877-9742), for any matter in relations to healthcare. A 35-year-old man from Beetham was shot and killed by Police last night (Tuesday 23rd August 2022). This is the same man that was charged and fined $400 in 2018 for kicking water on then-Acting Attorney General, Fitzgerald Hinds, during a walkabout following heavy rains and subsequent flooding in the area. According to reports, Richard ‘Snake’ Marcelle, 35, of 17th Street, Beetham Gardens, was shot several times during an alleged confrontation with Police Officers around 10:00 PM on Tuesday night. Officers on patrol in the area reportedly stopped to speak with a group of men and it is alleged the group, which included Marcelle, opened fire.
Officers returned fire and the group scattered. However, Marcelle was found with several bullet wounds. He was later pronounced dead. An illegal firearm was allegedly recovered at the scene and Police were up to this morning (Wednesday 24th August 2022) searching for the other men who were present during the incident. On 14th August 2018, Marcelle was charged with assault by beating and using obscene language following the water-kicking incident on MP Hinds, who was hounded and eventually run out of the area by a group of men. Hinds reported the matter to the Besson Street Police Station the following day.
