A car heading into Point Fortin on Friday afternoon (26th August 2022), veered off the roadway at a high rate of speed and crashed into the Thakoordass NP Gas Station in La Brea. The female driver, who lost control of her car, hit an oyster stall before crashing into several vehicles in the gas station. Three (3) persons remain at Hospital where they are being treated for injuries sustained during the accident, which took place shortly before 4:30 PM on Friday afternoon. The gas station had to be temporarily locked down as Fire Officers cleaned gas which spilled during the collision. A gas pump was also struck and almost uprooted during the accident, which immediately sent persons scampering out of the gas station for safety. The National Petroleum Marketing Company (NP) said that quick work by the gas station owner prevented a worse situation in La Brea on Friday. In a statement, NP said, ”The Trinidad & Tobago National Petroleum Marketing Company Limited (NP) can confirm that a motorist lost control of a vehicle which plowed into other nearby vehicles, eventually colliding with one of the Super/Premium fuel dispensers at the Service Station, causing it to fall on to another vehicle. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries to customers or Service Station personnel at the time this release was being prepared.” NP noted that following established Service Station Emergency Protocol, the dealer immediately activated the emergency shutdown device/switch which shuts down all power and the flow of fuel to all dispensers, inclusive of the damaged dispenser. “As a result of this quick action, the automatic shut-off valve system functioned as designed and there was no gushing or spillage of fuel on to the forecourt. However, as a precautionary measure, fire extinguishers were discharged by the forecourt attendants on duty and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services were also on hand to support the emergency response,” the statement added. NP said the area around the affected dispenser was immediately cordoned off and members of NP’s Maintenance Department were subsequently deployed. NP added that once on-site, the maintenance team conducted the complete isolation of the damaged fuel dispenser both electrically and mechanically (fuel line isolation), to prevent fuel spilling or power inadvertently causing the activation of the unit. “Furthermore, the damaged dispenser has been removed from the site and the area will remain cordoned off as the team works to replace it in the coming days. Moreover, the Service Station was back up and running at approximately 11:00 PM last evening, thereby reducing the inconvenience caused to La Brea residents and the wider community,” NP said.

Relatives of 11-year-old Rachel Bhagwandeen, who was mauled to death by a dog on Thursday (25th August 2022) in Vistabella, confirmed that a vet put the dog to sleep on Friday. Reports said the dog was a mixed American Bulldog.
Rachel and her 9-year-old brother, Jaylon, were watching television in a bedroom of the family’s home on Thursday when the dog suddenly appeared. The brave girl pushed Jaylon to the door and told him to run for his life. He ran and alerted his mother, Seema Bhagwandeen, 41, and other relatives nearby, who rushed to try to save the child. Unfortunately, no one was able to rescue her from the jaws of the savage dog. Rachel’s father, Pastor Kelvin Bhagwandeen, 47, of the New Beginning House of Praise in Chaguanas, said he intends to officiate at his daughter’s funeral. Speaking to Newsday, he said, “I officiated at so many people's funerals, I want to do it for my daughter as well. It would be tough, but I want to do it.” The grieving father of four (4) from Freeport said the family is hoping to have the funeral later in the week. Asked about counselling for Rachel’s brother, Jaylon, Bhagwandeen said staffers from the Social Development and Family Services from the San Fernando office visited and spoke to relatives on Thursday afternoon. He noted that the family is “monitoring Jaylon closely.” He added, “The social workers advised that it should be done after the funeral. We are keeping our eyes on him. He knows that Rachel died. We explained everything to him. He was looking at her photos today. They were always together. They were playmates. They are YouTube fans. They would watch anything from Mine Blocks to Fortnite.” Speaking about how his family is trying to deal with the tragedy, Bhagwandeen said, “My wife is in and out. I was at work at a flower shop when she called me. Because of the fact she was there when it happened, it is harder for her to deal with everything. She, too, is a pastor at the church.” Seema has hailed her daughter a hero for saving Jaylon. Rachel, a student of Vistabella Presbyterian School, was set to write the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) examination next year. An autopsy is set for next week at the Forensic Sciences Centre in St. James. [Source: Newsday]
A multi-coloured scarf cloud was spotted above a city in Southern China a few days ago. The incredible video was filmed in the city of Haikou in Hainan Province, China, on Sunday 21st August 2022.
The scarf cloud, also known as a pileus, is formed by the cooling and condensation of moist air forced up and over the peak. When the sunlight is at the right angle, the light diffracts between the droplets and the ice crystals in the cloud, creating a rainbow colour. Watch the incredible video below.
