The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) announced this afternoon that a Tropical Storm Watch (Yellow Level) is in effect for Tobago as Tropical Storm Gonzalo nears T&T. Tropical Storm conditions are expected to affect Tobago from Saturday morning (25th July 2020) between 8am and 8pm. The Tropical Storm Watch also applies to Grenada. The Met Office notes that periods of heavy to intense showers and/or Thunderstorms are likely. Heavy/intense downpours can result in Street/Flash Flooding. Gusty winds in excess of 85 Km/hr can be expected and the risk of Landslides/Landslips is very high in areas so prone. Sea conditions are also likely to become occasionally rough. In its 5pm update this afternoon, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami also noted that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Tobago and Grenada. Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are currently under a Hurricane Watch. According to the NHC, as of 5pm today the center of Tropical Storm Gonzalo was located near Latitude 9.8 North, Longitude 49.4 West. Gonzalo is moving toward the West near 13 Mph (20 Km/h). A westward to west-northwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is expected through the weekend. On the forecast track, the center of Gonzalo will approach the Southern Windward islands Friday night and move across the islands Saturday and Saturday evening. Maximum sustained winds are near 60 Mph (95 Km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next day or two, and there is still a chance that Gonzalo could become a Hurricane. Weakening is expected after Gonzalo moves into the Caribbean Sea. The NHC further notes that Gonzalo is a tiny Tropical Storm, and Tropical-Storm-force winds extend outward up to 25 Miles (35 Km) from the center. The Ministry of Health held an emergency virtual Press Conference at 11am this morning (Thursday 23rd July 2020) to update the public on the latest developments with COVID-19 in Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today: - Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, confirmed that the latest case of COVID-19 is a child of an employee at the West Mall Branch of Republic Bank. The Minister also indicated that after an investigation was conducted, it was determined that there was close contact with eleven (11) bank employees, all of whom were sent home and await swabbing today. The bank will remain closed while sanitization procedures are underway. - Minister Deyalsingh renewed his appeal to the population to mask up, sanitize and to stay at home if they are ill. - The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, stated all eight (8) of the primary contacts of case # 139 have tested negative for COVID-19 and they continue to be monitored for a fourteen (14) day quarantine period. This number includes the contact that would have visited Pennywise and the negative result would have allowed for the store to re-open. Contact Tracing for both case # 139 and # 141 continue. - Dr. Parasram, when answering a question on if the latest cases could be considered ‘community spread,’ stated that cases are being treated as ‘potentially local cases,’ until proven otherwise. - The Chief Medical Officer also confirmed that loss of taste and smell are in fact symptoms of COVID-19 and that it was something the population should look out for. As we reported earlier, the closure of the West Mall Branch of Republic Bank Limited (RBL) today (Thursday 23rd July 2020) was in fact connected to a COVID-19 case. That case was announced last night by the Ministry of Health as case # 141.
The Ministry of Health revealed some more information about that case at an emergency Press Conference this morning. According to the Ministry, case # 141 is a minor daughter (under age 18) of a RBL employee. Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, noted that video footage within RBL shows that the infected minor was in “close contact” with eleven (11) other RBL employees. Contact Tracing has started for this case and all infection control measures are being taken at RBL.

The Ministry of Health has called for an unusual out-of-schedule Press Conference at 11am this morning (Thursday 23rd July 2020) to update the public about possible new developments with COVID-19 in T&T.
In its 6pm update last night, the Ministry said that Trinidad and Tobago recorded another case of COVID-19, bringing the total recorded cases to 141. The Ministry stated this latest case is pending epidemiological investigation, which is the second such occurrence in the past two (2) days. Republic Bank announced this morning that their West Mall Branch will be closed today and there are rumors that this is directly linked to last night's new case (# 141). There is now a growing fear of the beginning of local spread in T&T. Several businesses were shut yesterday, including Pennywise outlets.

UPDATE (11am): The Ministry of Health revealed at a Press Conference this morning that the latest reported case from last night (case # 141) is in fact an 11-year-old daughter of an employee of Republic Bank. At around 9am this morning (Thursday 23rd July 2020), Republic Bank Limited (RBL) announced on its Facebook Page that its West Mall Branch will be closed today. Curiously, no other information was given. We have received unverified information that an RBL staff member at that location has tested positive for COVID-19, which resulted in the forced closure of that Branch today. We again emphasize this information is not yet verified as we await possible confirmation from the Ministry of Health later today. The Ministry of Health revealed just yesterday that there are two (2) recent COVID-19 cases as a result of local spread in Trinidad and Tobago. Those epidemiological investigations are ongoing and will take a few days. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
The Ministry of Health revealed in its 6pm update tonight that Trinidad and Tobago has recorded another case of COVID-19. The Ministry states this latest case is pending epidemiological investigation, which is the second such occurrence since yesterday. The Ministry provided no further details about this new case, which requires investigation. We can speculate that this person is a family member of the case from yesterday, or it could be someone unrelated. Regardless, this could be the second case of local spread, which means the Ministry is unable to track down the original source. Yesterday’s case caused several Pennywise outlets and other businesses to be shut today as a person connected to that case ventured into those establishments recently. Just this morning the Ministry announced another new case was recorded, which was imported. T&T now has a total of 141 recorded cases. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
Pennywise Cosmetics has issued a statement following the revelation today by the Ministry of Health that a primary contact of someone confirmed to have COVID-19, visited several Pennywise outlets recently. The revelation was made during the Ministry’s virtual Press Conference at 11am. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, indicated at the Press Conference that one of the recent COVID-19 cases in T&T (Case # 139) lived with upwards of eight (8) persons in one household while experiencing symptoms of viral illness. One of these eight (8) primary contacts recently visited several branches of Pennywise. Following this information, he said, branches in Charlotte Street, Port-of-Spain, Long Circular Mall and El Socorro are to be closed for sanitation and investigation. Staff will be listed and tested if necessary. According to Dr. Parasram, this new case was the first of its kind in the last 80 days. This person did not restrict themselves to movements within their home. As a result, the eight (8) persons in the household are now primary contacts. See some of Dr. Parasram’s statements during today’s Press Conference below: It is related to the case that we would have had, case 139. So basically, as we have discussed, this epidemic has progressed from the start and there are what we call simple cases and there are complex cases in terms of public health tracking and epidemiology. There is a simple case where someone will have a viral illness, have COVID-19 and stay at home, live by themselves and don't move when they have signs and symptoms which is a simple public health tracking event that limits the amount of spread that occurs.
