Ian Alleyne was live at the Gasparillo Flyover this morning (Tuesday 19th April 2022), one of many locations across the country where protests are being held over the increase in fuel prices today. Traffic gridlock was observed in more than thirty (30) intersections across the country, particularly along the East-West and South-North corridor, as scores of persons engaged in protest action, involving members of the United National Congress (UNC) and other NGOs. The slogan “Enough is Enough” was prominently displayed during the protests. Ian met and spoke with Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar on a range of issues currently affecting citizens. Taxi and maxi-taxi fares along some routes have increased from today and there are threats by the Transportation Association of Trinidad and Tobago (taxi and maxi-taxi drivers) to stay off the roads today in protest of the fuel increase.
Today will also see the return of more than 200,000 students in the classrooms, thousands of them for the first time, since the start of the Pandemic in March 2020. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) issued a statement last night advising it was the right of citizens to engage in protest action, but it must be done within the confines of the law.
