Massy Stores confirmed in a Media Release this afternoon (Thursday 28th April 2022) that it was the target of a cybersecurity attack which led to the technical difficulties experienced today at all stores across the country.
The company said it took immediate action, suspending all customer facing systems, and has been working with third party experts to resolve the situation. Backup servers were not affected and the technical team is actively working with the expert teams to restore the system safely and in the shortest time possible. The company said it is not aware of any evidence, at this time, that any customer, supplier or employee data has been compromised or misused as a result of the situation. Massy added, “Resolution of the incident will take time, therefore all Massy Stores Supermarkets will remain closed today (Thursday, April 28th) to allow for its technical team to restore the system, in keeping with its security protocols.” Massy said it is expected that all store locations will resume normal operations from tomorrow (Friday 27th April 2022). The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily COVID-19 update this afternoon (Thursday 28th April 2022) that there are 802 new COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago plus two (2) additional deaths. The number of new cases is the highest since 11th February 2022 (963) and represents a 47.7% increase in reported cases from yesterday. The 7-day rolling average has increased to 497. There have been 9,082 new cases and seventy-one (71) deaths so far in the month of April. The Ministry reported 543 new cases yesterday plus two (2) more unfortunate deaths. The country’s death toll has increased to 3,821. As of 27th April 2022, 268 deaths were fully vaccinated persons while 3,161 deaths were not fully vaccinated. 390 deaths were recorded prior to 24th May 2021 (date at which the first group of vaccinated persons became fully vaccinated). A total of 711,166 persons have been fully vaccinated, representing 50.8% of the population. Meanwhile, 688,834 persons are not fully vaccinated (only received a first dose or no doses), representing 49.2% of the population. 150,338 persons in total have taken a booster shot. Based on data from 22nd July 2021 - 27th April 2022, 3,267 patients in the parallel healthcare system (Hospitals and step-down facilities) are fully vaccinated, representing 18.2%, while 14,669 are not fully vaccinated, representing 81.8%. The Ministry states that the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during a 3-day period between 25th - 27th April 2022 and not the last twenty-four (24) hours. The Ministry also notes that there are currently 169 COVID-19 positive patients in total being treated at Hospitals and step-down facilities (down 0.59% from yesterday). In a Media Release on Thursday (27th April 2022), Massy Stores said it is “sincerely apologizing to our valued customers for the inconvenience caused today due to technical challenges with our front-end, checkout systems.”
The statement from Massy added, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, all Massy Stores Supermarkets across the country are affected. These challenges impact our customer shopping experience as items cannot be purchased from our store locations or pharmacies at this time.” The company advised that Massy Stores technical team is “working assiduously to restore functionality in the shortest possible time, while investigating the root cause of the issue. Customers will be notified when the system is fully restored at all stores.” Surepay and Moneygram customers are also advised to visit alternative locations to access bill payment and wire money transfer services. Massy Card holders should also retain copies of their bills for which the respective Massy Points will be credited, “as points will not be automatically added to Massy Card accounts at this time. The Water and Sewerage Authority (the Authority) is advising customers served by the Maraval Water Treatment Plant, who are currently experiencing a disruption in their water supply, that this is due to mechanical issues impacting one of the pumps at the facility. The Authority further advises that it may take up to twenty-four (24) hours for the service to normalize to some affected areas following the completion of the repair works.
